Rob Johnson by a mile!  A mile!  We traded him to the Bills for a first round draft pick which turned into.... Fred Taylor!  I'll go out on a limb and say that Rob Johnson is one of the top 5 overall draft picks we ever made.

Picked Garrard because if his time in a Jags uniform. Argument for Johnson because the trade is legit though. Garrard proved to be a pretty good 4th rounder and made for a couple fun seasons

Rob Johnson by a mile!  A mile!  We traded him to the Bills for a first round draft pick which turned into.... Fred Taylor!  I'll go out on a limb and say that Rob Johnson is one of the top 5 overall draft picks we ever made.

What did Taylor do? He divided the Jaguars' fan base.

 

It marked the first time in franchise history when season ticket renewals went down. Attendance went down as well. We had averaged 73.000 prior to Fred Taylor.

 

He played the majority of his career in half-empty stadiums and the general lack of interest in Fred Taylor led to habitually blacking games out.

 

We lost a future Hall of Fame and two-time Super Bowl winning coach because of Fred Taylor. His arrival from Gainesville marked the beginning of a non-stop assault on Tom Coughlin by the Gator-infested media.

 

He never led the league in rushing. He never was voted into a single Pro Bowl.

But if I cant pick Rob Johnson based on who he turned into and had to do it based on their actual play, I'd go with Garrard.  Even though he was an average at best starting QB, he was a starting QB nonetheless.  He was essentially the equal of Leftwich who we grabbed in the first.  Definitely an increase in value.  And obviously the most important position.

 

I always had a soft spot for Seth Payne.  Eventually turned into a starter for us during our peak time in the late 90s.  Was sad to see him leave and head off to Houston.  Started there but injuries caught up to him a little.

 

Two guys not on your list, I wanted to give a shout out to... Reggie Barlow and Tavian Banks.... Barlow was one of those few guys who was good at both punt and kick returns.  And Tavian Banks was about to turn into a really good player until a bad injury ended his career.  He has always been the "what if" guy in our history if you ask me.  (Also, I think his draft pick came from that Rob Johnson trade as well)

Wasnt it a cheap shot that took him out as well?  Or a late hit out of bounds?  I dont remember the exact play off the top of my head but do remember that it was a controversial play.  Disappointing.

It was a very questionable hit to the knees by Ray Buchanon (iIRC) on the sideline as he was going out of bounds. We took the trip up to the ATL for that game and it was a good one.

I remember Tavian Banks performance in a preseason game vs the Dallas Cowboys (the Jags just rolled over them like 40-20 or something.....Tavian made Dallas defensive players look stupid trying to tackle him. He scored 2 TD, IIRC. 

 

Had he just ran out of bounds instead of trying to gain that stupid meaningless extra YARD on the sidelines vs Atlanta, he might have gone on to have a special career of his own.

How am I taking a cheap shot?? :wacko: :wacko: I loved the player!! I actually blame coaching that instead of draining it into the skill players minds that they had to get every yard should instead have been preaching "pick your battles" and take the sideline (just go out of bounds) on some instances and live to play another down, especially when the potential benefit is only a few more feet of yardage, otherwise. The hit might have been cheap (low at knees) but thats exactly the kind of hit you avoid when you just go out of bounds rather than fighting for that extra 15-30 inches of field position. Jerry Rice made a (longer) career of doing just as I suggest.

Buchanon definitely earns blame for the dirty hit, but guess what, dirty hits happen. As a player (target) you gotta be smart. Ergo, why players like Jerry Rice would often take the smart route and simply go out of bounds a lot rather than fight for that extra 10-20 inches. 

 

Had Banks done that, he'd have lived his NFL career another day. I wish he would have. He was a special talent. 

 

Did Buchanon ever get fined for the hit?? I know they go back and review questionable hits.
