Kiper/McShay's three round draft

#1

The first round was televised on ESPN2. The second and third were strictly online.

After Clowney and Watkins go first and second, McShay picked Khalil Mack.

Quote:

Analysis: We need a quarterback, but Mack is one of the four elite players in this draft class, and we think he's long enough to play the "Leo" role (hybrid DE/OLB) in Gus Bradley's defensive scheme, but if not, we can move him to linebacker. Regardless, he's an every-down impact defender.

You have to have Insider access for the rest but the next two picks:

Round Two - Tom Savage QB/Pittsburgh

Round Three - Josh Huff WR/Oregon

Yeah I saw that too. I would be absolutely disgusted if Savage and Huff were the picks at 39 and 70. I would have a very hard time coming up with anyone I could realistically hate more at either spot.

Nope. Want no part of Savage

Tom Savage with a 2nd Round grade is surprising.

Just goes to show you, this very deep WRs draft doesn't necessarily mean we will get a good player in round 3.

If we want one, we need to get one in RD1... After the first 2 players (Sammy and Evans) there's a big dropoff until the next tier of about 6-7 WRs, (all of which could be 1st rounders), leaving just average receivers to be had later.

If anything, this deep WRs draft may just move other players at other positions down to 39....

Don't think we will be able to pick any of the potential #1 WRs at #39.

Nah, it just means they are both idiots. They have Moncrief and Allen Robinson (and Coleman/Richardson even) still on the board when we take Huff, both of which would be perfectly fine picks at 39 and fantastic at 70.

They could have given us Mack, Marcus Martin, and Moncrief or Robinson. That would be a drool worthy first two days.

i agree, dont like rounds 2and 3 at all. There are quite a few players that would be better picks

I'd imagine the Moncrief jersey would be pretty popular in Jacksonville.

Or we could have had Mack, Kelvin Benjamin and Gabe Jackson.

Mettenberger was still on the board after 3 rounds too. So our draft could have looked like

Mack

Benjamin

Jackson

Mettenberger

I LOVE that draft.

Maybe I am wrong. But I don't see Savage as a guy that Caldwell would take.

Part of me also wonders if his rise is being overblown (alot) going into this draft. I would not be shocked if Savage, Garoppolo and a few of these other QB's go much later than their current projection.

I don't think Dave wants Savage. He is I believe the only top 2 days rated QB that wasn't brought in for a visit.

My boy Savage! I dont think any team should take him in the 2nd round though. And frankly I wouldnt take him in the 3rd unless I had other picks to play with. But I'm not suprised he is moving up boards. He has the look and the arm. Just inexperienced.

I've got an insider password but dont remember it so cant view it here at work. I'm assuming based on someone's post that Kelvin Benjamin is available. Im hoping the guy falls to our 2nd round pick. I know there is divided opinion on the guy but I like him. Yea he is rough around the edges. Can drop a few passes. And sounds like he is a dope. But the size and football speed is tough to pass up. I've seen too many bigtime plays to pass on him. Worse case I think he can be a 2nd/3rd option that could be deadly in the redzone. Best case, he improves his game, route running, and maybe even his hands and turns into a bigtime threat. His ceiling is as high as anyone else's in this draft.

Part of me thinks Garop could fall just because he has a weaker arm. And the fear of no pocket awareness. People like the Romo comparisons because of the school but physically Romo is superior. Romo has the NFL arm. I dont know that Garop does.

Savage in round 2. Is this some kind of joke? Some kind of sick joke?

I like how the last name savage sounds. Mean, intimidating. Draft him at 2nd round please.

I see on ESPN that they did a head to head for three rounds.

Was wondering what it showed.

And we're going to make 100 picks -- 50 for each of us -- taking you through three full rounds. The rules:

1. We rotate picks: Todd has odds, Mel has evens, and picks are made for each slot through Round 3.
2. These are our picks: Each selection reflects our call, not what we think teams want.
3. It's about the board: The analysis is less a scouting report, and more about why the pick was made.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars

McShay's pick: Khalil Mack, OLB, Buffalo

Analysis: We need a quarterback, but Mack is one of the four elite players in this draft class, and we think he's long enough to play the "Leo" role (hybrid DE/OLB) in Gus Bradley's defensive scheme, but if not, we can move him to linebacker. Regardless, he's an every-down impact defender.

39. Jacksonville Jaguars

McShay's pick: Tom Savage, QB, Pittsburgh

Analysis: Savage is the fourth-ranked QB in my board, and with Mack being our choice at No. 3, this is a good spot to try to land a quarterback whom we can hopefully develop into a starter.

70. Jacksonville Jaguars

Kiper's pick: Josh Huff, WR, Oregon

Analysis: With additions to the pass rush and a QB prospect in the fold, Huff comes in as insurance with the uncertainty surrounding Justin Blackmon. Huff will make the contested catch and is underrated as a playmaker with the ball in his hands.

I feel like the 2nd and 3rd round picks were throw aways so they could give bigger name players to larger markets. I just feel like both of them were drafted much higher than I would rank them. Adding to the fact that you haven't heard much about the Jags looking at Savage, I just dont think Caldwell is that interested.

Conspiracy theorists unite.
