U Verse vs. Directv

#1

I've been with Direct for 12 years. Dont really have a problem, except in the downpours.

Recently I had a U Verse internet connection put in. My question is, I know I can save about $40 a month if I switch over, year contract. I can renegotiate again or cancel, with more channels

Anyway...before I switch, is there anyone who has any input/advice on the matter. People I've spoken to around me like U Verse, but I'd like to get the brilliance of this MBs opinion.

Thanks

I've had both. I used to have DirectTV and Earthlink DSL for internet. Speed with the Uverse internet is considerably faster. I was a little concerned about some softness I'd read about in uverse's HDTV picture but it is fine. Make no mistake, DTV picture is sharper but you can only tell if you're watching very quickly moving scenes or sitting close. DTV has better user interface in my opinion but it reacts a little more slowly. If you have any specific questions I can try to answer. For me, bundled uverse is the winner over what I had.

I preferred DTV.

But my wallet prefers the Uverse bundle with internet.

All in all, Uverse isn't that much worse than DTV.  I find it bearable.

The DVR isn't as nice IMO (DTV having roots in Tivo and Linux, and Uverse being a variety of Windows that has the standard need to reboot occasionally to solve problems.)  Uverse DVR seems to get better with each software release, but it's only incremental and isn't as good an interface as DTV already is IMO.

I'm out of town and so require DirecTV to get NFL Sunday Ticket. I love the service, but could get everything else I can't live without much cheaper. No Jaguars every Sunday is a deal breaker, unfortunately.

Not to hijack but I need some help as well. I currently live in an area where Comcast has a stranglehold on the market. Its either Comcast or nothing. (I have both cable and internet thru CC) I'll be moving in two months and where I'm moving to I'll FINALLY have an option between cable providers and satellite. I need some help with my decision though.

How would y'all rank the companies based out price and quality of services provided?

DTV

Uverse

Comcast

Dish

DTV all day. I have the extra choice package which comes with every major sports own network. And a bunch of other crap. Plus Showtime, 6 boxes(one a dvr), insurance & NFL Sunday ticket and I only pay $202. The 6 months without the ticket it's about 130 sum. All in all it's more bang for your buck. My dish barley goes out. Now if you don't need all that like me lol. Then go with unverse cause of the price. For the basic channels they ain't bad.

Not to throw a wrench in it, but I have UVerse with every possible premium channel, 20Gig internet, plus unlimited phone service for $166/mo.  Oh, I don't get the ticket though I just watch the local channel.  Smile  Just sayin'!

I've got what I feel is the best of all worlds. Comcast Internet/phone and Uverse TV. I had DTV put in and that same afternoon cancelled it. Just happened to be in the rainy season...

Direct TV --- I have autopay so I don't have to see the financial damage each month.

Respect man, I don't know if I would've kept the Sunday Ticket (it's not cheap) to watch this team the last 2-3 years,

Mine is $160 for U200 (no additional premiums) + internet Pro (no home phone service, instead I use Ooma.)  2 HD DVRs and wireless home networking.

Surely you're on a promo plan, and you'll be shocked when it runs out.  My bill has slowly climbed in the last two years (as it does anywhere you jump to over time.)

I've got MetroPCS.  $40/mo unlimited talk, text, and speed limited data after a certain threshold.  I don't know what the threshold is because I rarely use it all, since I'm almost always on wifi.

Limited choices for phones, but I'm happy with what I've got since I'm not snobbish or hard to please when it comes to cell phones.  It's android and not an ancient brick phone, so that's good enough for me.

I've been happy with the quality and reception.  I can't recall being in a dead spot.  I think the coverage is similar to TMobile, which I had no problem with when I had them, either.

As bad as it was, I can't imagine Sunday afternoons without the Jaguars. Here in the Boondocks, my entertainment dollars are budgeted towards the home based options.

I have the U450 (I think that's what they call it), and yea, I'm on a two year promo plan.  I'll probably either down grade it or work on them for some kind of continuing discount to stay on.  Overall though it seems like bundling services work out to better deals.

Thanks for the insight.

I may also be changing phone service. Now? iPhone or Galaxy 4? But that's another can of worms.

I'll also add that MetroPCS is no contract.  That made it virtually risk free in my mind to try a new carrier (even though most carriers have a 30 day or so cancellation policy.)

Biggest mistake I made was switching from DirecTV to Xfinity. My wife insisted on the switch because her job offer huge corporate discounts through Comcast/Verizon.

Im not a fan of Digital Cable TV, especially if the programming keeps freezing up due to a problem pushing the updates to the box which I feel they should have better control over. I would expect this problem with DirecTV.

To answer the question, I would go with DirecTV, the loss of signal was getting old with every rain storm, so I placed a call for the tech to come and re-position the dish to where it isnt effected too much by the weather and everything was good.
