Portland flushes water supply after teen pees in reservoir

Quote:The latest incident took place about 1 a.m. Wednesday. Cameras captured three teens near the Mount Tabor Reservoir No. 5. One of them approached the iron fence and apparently got close enough to relieve himself directly into the reservoir.

The three teens were apprehended, and the 50-million-gallon reservoir was taken offline for testing.

Thanks to the teens, the Portland Water Bureau will have to dump 38 million gallons of drinking water, said administrator David Shaff.

So um they piss maybe 2 cups worth of urine between the 3 of them in a 50 million gallon reservoir and the solution is to just dump 75% of it?

Didn't read the article, but couldn't it be treated?

Not that I condone the behavior, but I find it hard to believe that animals aren't doing their business into the reservoir as well. Or that this kind of stuff hasn't gone on before. I thought the water in the reservoir still had to be treated and filtered and what not, anyway

Yep. If they dumped it down the sewer drain it'll be treated as sewage. If they dumped it down a storm drain it'll go through a natural process, unless they have storm water treatment there. I'm sure they dumped it to save face and not have to field a ton of calls about safe drinking water.

My question is, if it's already happened before, why not put up another fence farther away from the reservoir?

Plus, charge the kid the going rate for the water he/they wasted...

I'm glad we have well water. Seems like such a waste because of public perception.  Imagine if they have a drought now.

Maybe they were worried about Hepatitis and AIDS.. That would be cause for concern, filtration system or not..

Plus dead

Fish, birds, etc rot it out in

The water and that creates bacteria. When

People feed ducks bread (which they can't digest) some of it

Floats off in the water, rots and builds up ecoli.

You can't get HIV from urine unless there's blood in it.

How sure are you that there wasn't any blood in his urine? Sure enough to turn the other cheek and presume he was clean?

One would think that municipalities would be making the public water supplies a bit more secure than that. The kid has exposed a serious weakness in the security of the water supply.

I wasn't arguing the decision to flush the system. I was pointing out that you can't get HIV from urine alone.
