Bored? Draft Burnout?

#1

With the draft pushed now into the second weekend of May, it means we get two more weeks of pontification from the draft "experts". We get two more weeks of teams planting info to the media. Two more weeks of hearing what teams want to move up and move down. Two more weeks of hearing from "AFC scout" or "NFC GM" about why a certain prospect is overrated. And with Twitter, it makes it even worse.

At a certain point every draft season, I start to suffer from draftlash. I love watching college football. I like watching the combine. But once those are over, the draft coverage becomes intolerable. Only five more weeks to go!

Their product and the product my 3 month old grandaughter produces are remarkably similar.

Same grandaughter has discovered her voice and makes more sense than above and smiles a lot more.

I recognize this syndrome, it is the dreaded PDZ.

This syndrome is cruel in that you will have a two week high at best.

PDZ (Pre Dead Zone) teases you, then leaves you in a funk of depression.

And just when your reserves and immune system is at it's lowest.

THE DEAD ZONE.

Yea, I feel the same way.  It becomes annoying right about now.  It seems April always takes forever and now a few extra weeks are tagged on.  the worst part is that I can't help but keep following it.  At least baseball has started for those of us who like baseball.  It provides a reprieve.

YES

I know alot of people don't like Kiper but I enjoy listening to the weekly podcast that he and McShay broadcast. There is another one with Bucky Brooks and Daniel Jeremiah that is good. I avoid anything else draft related like the plague. Everybody pretends to be an expert.

Interesting to note that the 2013 NBA Draft was on June 27 ----  1 week after Game 7 of the NBA Finals which was played on June 20.

We have a few "experts" here on our board.

I hear you.  After the first couple weeks of FA, it is pretty stale.  I don't see the reason why that was pushed back.  April has nothing for the NFL.

Yeah....I wish they had moved it up 2 weeks instead of back 2 weeks

I'm more bummed that its during TPC weekend than anything else.  Especially since I dont live in town anymore and wont be able to watch the draft on my big high def flat screen.  Typically I drive down late thursday night, go to the tournament all day friday, and then meet up wtih friends/family friday night for drinks and parties and whatnot.  And then go back to the tournament saturday morning.... spend the afternoon on the beach.  drive home early sunday and get home in time to watch the leaders tee off.

this year Im not sure what I'm going to do.  I'm not driving down thursday night because I dont want to miss the first round.  I may just take thursday off as well.  Come down wednesday night.  go to the tournament thursday.  And then hit up the Jags draft party thursday night (the only good thing about this).  go to the tournament again on friday.  If I do go out w/ friends/family that night, itll have to be somewhere that I can watch the draft.  Saturday maybe I go to tourney in the morning but I'd rather get in some beach time so may do that instead.  watch the rest of the draft in the afternoon.  catch the re-runs of the golf that evening on the golf channel.  and then drive back on sunday.

** but... its a tough week for me to get two days off.  maybe I can do a halfday thursday and get down in time for the beginning of the draft.

Goodell milking NFL money...it was great when they had it on the weekend; plenty of festivities, etc. Now they start on Thursday which sux. Maybe Mark Cuban has a point in the over saturation of the product..

Personally, a game every Thurs night now, then Sundays and Mondays is a bit much. Ranks right up there in the season ticket holder rip off of full price for exhibition games.

I get a kick out of them. Twitter is littered with them.

Goodell has ruined the draft for the die hards. Draft weekend used to be great. Starting at noon Saturday and lasting into the night. And then start again Sunday morning and go into the late afternoon. The move to Thursday night (while probably supplying better ratings and more $) has taken away from the event.

Draft lag might be another way to describe it.

It feels too drawn out to me.

I know the people at the top of the NFL really aren't interested in my thoughts, but I really hope they make the draft earlier next year.

Because I'm bored of it now ! For the last few weeks there has really been nothing new to say about it and it seems every player has been evaluated and re-evaluated and then evaluated again just to be sure. I've given up trawling around the various NFL "news" sites, because I just don’t think I'm going to learn anything new. And when we finally make our first round pick, I think most of us will shrug our shoulders and say "yeah, thought so". John O deserves a medal for continuing to bat away questions like "do you think we will draft Johnny Manziel?"

Ok. I accept the extra prep time might have been useful for the scouts and the GMs, but that's not my point !

So my question is - when did you start to lose interest in this years draft ? Or are you still fascinated by it all ?

The draft itself is not boring (although I know plenty of people in my family that would argue that).

The lead up to the draft this year is ridiculous. Not one person likes the extra two weeks of waiting, the extra two weeks of speculation, the extra two weeks of mock drafts and big boards. Nobody. Except maybe Goodell.

Wouldn't shock me if they move it back to April. Wouldn't shock me if they keep it in May. It's Roger's world and we're just livin in it.

I'm pretty sure your boredom won't play into their decision making process next year, especially after they get the ratings numbers for the draft.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

I can't wait for the fans to boo the tar out of God-El in NY.

Which is why it will stay on weeknight at primetime. They get the eyeballs. The draft could be on at 2am on Christmas and we'd watch. But the extra viewers are the casual viewer. The guy or gal that isn't watching the draft on a Saturday afternoon but will watch it on Thursday night. Goodell already has us hooked and he knows it.

It's a slow process. If the delay in holding the draft annoys fans it won't show up in the ratings until they've been annoyed several years in a row. However, once those 5-10 years happen and the ratings start to decline, it will be really hard for the NFL to make that ground back up.
