A Band Called Death
|
In the early 70s, three African-American brothers from Detroit who formed a garage band that played R&B music, but were inspired to switch to rock and roll by The Who and Alice Cooper.
The result was punk rock, before there was punk rock, from a band called Death. They disbanded in 1977 and were rediscovered in 2009. There is a documentary telling their story. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDPDm9_nX0o#t=115 I love this album. These guys were so far ahead of their time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9obRQDQsEI

Well, here's another band named Death. This one sounds more like what you'd think a band named Death would sound like.

Hadn't seen the documentary yet, but I hear it's really cool.
The one song I heard, "Politicians in My Eye" sounds a lot like Living Colour. Word is, Vernon Reid shows up in the documentary. Listening to the album RJ posted, I gotta agree it sure sounds like early punk. Some pretty good early punk at that.
Documentary is on Netflix. I have been meaning to watch it. Though I'm not really musically educated with history on the genres, etc... it is definitely interesting/fascinating for them to be rediscovered 30 years later and given credit for being the first.
I'd like to add side note. No one knows who was the first, but their story is still amazing. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
