Orakpo tagged, scratch him off the list

I didn't really want or expect him here...same as Greg Hardy.  You were going to have to pay ridiculous money if they hit the open market and they aren't worth that.  I don't think many players that hit free agency and garner ridiculous money are worth it and generally the results prove me right.

This team doesn't need to spend money on guys like Hardy and Orakpo in order to be successful.  He would be nice to have but not an end all.

We need to draft some dominate big uglys and then we will have a pretty good pass rush without signing a big name FA. I absolutely LOVE Hardy, was one of my favorite players while he was in Oxford Ms, but I have to think that 40% of his success is thanks to Carolina's stacked Dline. He would maybe get 5-7 sacks here. Not worth the price. Orakpo would accomplish even less

Orakpo averages 10 QB sacks per year, I'd say thats worth it.

Hardy's past 2 years have been the same.

Who's NOT worth it would be a guy like the Cincinnati DE, Johnson or Houston from Oakland. Those 2 aren't great pass rushers, yet will get a LOT of money this offseason.

Houston would be brought in to play the 5 tech position and would be an instant and significant upgrade over Alualu.

Given what I believe he'll cost, I still don't think it would be worth it. I'd rather just draft our own upgrade from Alualu.

I'm more annoyed about Worilds getting the transition tag, I thought he was an under the radar player to watch.

Trashing Bennett, Johnson, and Houston...you are an expert at looking at a player page for 3 seconds and knowing how good a player is huh. All 3 of them are quite good, especially Bennett and Johnson.

I am forced to watch Lamarr Houston quite a bit, and I believe he's more talented than Red Bryant and a huge upgrade over Alualu.

In Oakland they have him playing RE at 6' 3" and 305lbs, so yes he doesn't put up great sack numbers (around 5/year), but he's also playing out of position for a team that never plays with a lead.

If we stuck him on the line as a 2 gapping LE and moved him inside as part of the Lightning Package, I believe he would flourish here.

If anyone remembers or cares to go back and watch our week 2 game, Houston took it to Eugene Monroe pretty good.

I stated those 3 players won't be worth nearly what they will be paid on the FA market, rendering going after those players pointless.

I stand by that.

Signing any one of them would be akin to the Porter, Session, Landry and Pashos type deals of years past.

If Goodell has this kind of influence, why didn't he make San Francisco go easy on the jags when they were in London?

What makes you say this?

Didn't Bennett just have a dominant season on the Super Bowl winning defense? Lamar Houston would be a huge upgrade over Alualu (would we cut him if we brought in Houston? Save some $?) and didn't Michael Johnson have a great season (albeit with low sacks)?

The problem with the Jag's low sack number and near-nothing pressure on the opposing QB is that the current pass rushing DEs are terrible. Guys like Bennett, Johnson, and Houston are average and would not be at the top of my list; however, they do represent upgrades to what the Jags have now.

Although I would like to see an effective LEO in free agency, Houston would be a significant upgrade over Alualu, and leaving Alualu as a rotation would be solid.

No, no it definitely won't be like any of those.

Like many other Defensive players that were underachievers in college,  Michael Johnson thrived under Mike Zimmer's coaching in Cincinnati.   Johnson has tremendous athletic skills and a huge wingspan.  He probably has the natural ability to be a significant factor in the NBA.

If Michael Johnson signs with the Vikings,  I expect him to be a very effective DE for them.   The question / concern that jumps out for me if in the position of all the teams except the Bengals and Vikings, is will Johnson respond to the coaching he gets in a new situation???

Or they could be akin to the Keenan McCardell, Gary Walker, Chris Naeole, Mike Peterson, Alan Ball types deals of years past.

But those don't fit your MO. Amiright???

Worilds signed his transition tag sheet...wow. Now he's off the market. Basically Bennett, Houston, and Schofield now.

Unless the Steelers can free up a sizeable amount of salary cap space,  there's a pretty good chance that they will release LaMarr Woodley.

Can't imagine Dave will be interested. Will be 30 and 3 three straight years of injuries.

Agreed.

LaMarr Woodley appears to be a better fit for a team that's closer to title contention.   However,  if Woodley does become available,  that should increase the chances of the Jaguars being able to land one of the other edge players at a price that's somewhat more favorable for the team.
