Salary Cap to be higher than expected

#1

Watching NFL Network this morning, they indicated the NFL will determine the Salary Cap today.  The speculation is, the cap will be set around $133 million this year, higher than the earlier expected $126 million.

If this is true, this has two potentially negative repercussions for the Jaguars.

First, a higher salary cap will enable teams to keep more of their players.  Instead of a guy like Greg Hardy walking, maybe now Carolina can accommodate his salary demands.

Secondly, a higher salary cap figure may cut into the Jaguars' profitability.  Teams will have to spend up to a certain percentage of the salary cap.  The higher that number is, the more in expenses each team will have.  To a low revenue team like the Jaguars, that may make a huge difference, especially when you factor in how much the Jaguars are contributing to the new video board.

Discuss.

Once upon a time Khan said he was gonna spend to the cap. We need to do something this year to upgrade the top 3rd of the roster. Make it rain and bring in two bona fide starters so we can have some flexibility in the draft.
Only a chump boos the home team!

I was never overtly concerned with signing guys along the caliber of Hardy and Graham anyway. I just have the feeling that their price tag is going to be too high for Caldwell's taste. Now, if that higher Cap means that some of the more moderately priced guys don't hit the market, then that will be upsetting.

As for how it will impact this team in terms of spending to the Cap, I feel confident that a big chunk of that will be taken up by the contracts of Posluszny and Lewis.

In short, the Cap doesn't worry me anywhere near as bad as it used to. Now if I were a Dallas fan? I'd be freaking out man.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

The pool of better and available free agents this year will shrink as the higher cap is realized. Also, the downside for some of these players is that the one year franchise tag will become more affordable for some teams that were more challenged by the previous cap number.

Wonder if this is related to Jerry Jones' failure as GM

Higher salary cap means a bigger pool of money available to all teams, including the Jaguars, right?  While it will certainly help some teams to structure deals to retain players who might otherwise go into free agency, but it also gives teams like the Jaguars more ammunition to go after players they're targeting.  I wouldn't worry too much about the profit margins.  Those tend to reconcile when you've got a team that's winning.

Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Sign Greg Hardy and Jairus Byrd and build around these through the draft (QB + others) and next year has a chance to be double digit wins.

Quite honestly, the NFL needs to think about the long term.  Most homes now have at least one 50" TV (or bigger) which makes the games very more appealing to watch from the sofa.   Increasing the cap results in paying the players more which results in higher ticket prices.  The bottom is going to fall out.  Watch for an NFL crash in the next 5 years.

NFL salaries or should I say the "salary cap" isn't through the roof right now because of sold out stadiums....they are where they are at largely because of TV contracts that are in the billions of dollars.

Yes, but if you lose the traditional idiot like me that would buy 4 tickets, drag my family to tailgates and spend $25 parking and $100+ at the stadium during home games .... and 30+ year olds start hanging at home with the $300 NFL Ticket and 12 pack of Stella ($16) the NFL will lose in the long run.   That's what I see happening.

I get the feeling that the NFL is geared more towards the younger crowds to buy tickets anyway. The League knows that the 40 and 50 year old fans are going to retire to their TVs and couches and easy chairs and Air Conditioning regardless. But as long as little five year old Johnny is addicted to his team, he'll push and prod to buy those season tickets just as soon as he gets the funds for it.

Just seems to me like the League is willing to let the older fans move to their homes and let the younger crowd take over the stadiums.

Contract talks with Byrd have started. Word is, they're going well so far. I doubt he leaves Buffalo.

Well, TBH, thats hardly a surprise.

Did people expect that these 2 would just hit free agency without any attempt to negotiate a long term deal with their current teams, right up to the deadline?

Just because they are in talks right now, doesn't necessarily guarantee that both will re-sign there.

Greg Hardy was slapped with the franchise tag....cross him off the list.

Thanks Goodell, for raising the salary cap ya jerk!

The increased space means the best players are more likely to be resigned, leaving less talent on the market.

That's out of the FO's control, but I'm sure they'll get blamed for it anyway.

I expect them to be a bit less active than they intended to on the first few days as a result.  In turn, we'll probably be more active in the settling down period where we could pick up a  lineman, linebacker, and pass rusher or two.

Goodell probably knew the Jaguars were going to make a run at and probably land Greg Hardy, so he quickly figured out a way to stop that from happening, by raising the salary cap amount for all the teams. Lord knows, Goodell wants no part of the Jags being successful while still in Jacksonville, as that don't help him get his way of the Jags moving to London or LA...

I'm kidding/ the above is in jest........maybe.....

Not a Goodell fan at all though.

It was the fact that talks were going well that was the point. Also, just like with Hardy, Byrd will most likely be franchised if they don't reach a long term deal before the tag deadline.
