Great read.

That was a great read, and another reinforcement of Caldwell and Bradley's approach to the team. You can tell that Dave really respects how much picking the wrong player can set a roster back. This should be an exciting period for all of us.

Now that I have said all of that, I just have to say this. Prisco needs a [BAD WORD REMOVED] editor.

I'm trying to make myself more informed and less opinionated.

Stop saying whatever stupid thing you're talking about and pay attention to all the interesting things I have to say!

Quote:"In today's day and age, if you can't get Peyton Manning or Matt Ryan, and they might not be available for the next 10 or 15 years, then you have to adapt and build the roster and do what's best for the organization," Caldwell said.

"And if a quarterback presents itself later in the draft, you take and develop him. Having a franchise guy makes the world a lot easier, though. It can erase a lot of mistakes you make. But if you force it, you can screw it up. I don't know if we're going to find that guy, but I hope we do."

I like this guy. He understands the benefits and ramifications on both ends of the spectrum.

If he doesn't pick a quarterback in the 1st two rounds, Gabbert will be brought back from the dead and will be starting day 1.

What that quote tells me its bridgewater or bust because the other qb's don't standout as franchise guys. Bridgewater seems to me more like matt ryan than any other guy in this draft.

It's funny how he compares Matt Ryan to Peyton Manning. Other than how they both fall off a cliff in the playoffs Ryan's career is more like Jay Cutler's so far.

I didnt like that it sounds like there's a Chance Henne could be the opening day starter. Yikes.

If he goes to camp with Henne, Gabbert, and some late round prospects or undrafted guys it'd be horrific. To not even try to bring in some free agents before the draft to see if you can improve over captain check-down and scaredy gabs would be ridiculous.

Certainly doesn't sound like he's afraid to pass if the QB isn't there.  Must mean he's got a case of the "QB fear".. LOL.

You can't manufacture a franchise QB, force something that isn't there.

You can only find franchise QBs when they are available, not when convenient.  Just because you need one, doesn't mean your "savior" will be immediately available to you.

That's pretty much the gist of what he's saying.  Like it or not, sometimes you have to buy your time until you can get the right guy.  Even if it means holding on to guys like Henne while you continue to pursue your QB of the future.

False dilemma. There are lots of QBs better than Henne around. Just because he doesn't waste draft picks on guys who aren't worth taking doesn't mean he shouldn't sign someone in free agency who isn't afraid to throw the ball more than 3 yards past the line of scrimmage unless it's to the other team.

From what I read :

If he doesn't pick a QB at 3 all the reasons are there to see.

If he does however that will mean that Caldwell is convinced his QB will be very good.

By the way the Seahawks pretty much forced themselves to get their QB, they signed a lot, traded for one, and overdrafted one against the opinion of their own coaches. Didn't turned out too bad. I'd trade for Thaddeus Lewis if we don't draft a starter.

Why?  He can't even beat out Gabbert in training camp.

One funny thing is that you can argue every rookie QB that started in the NFL over the past few years played better than Henne.  Why not just grab a guy in the 4th as a stop gap? :woot:

I concur that it is a great read.

I like that he is using the combine to talk to players they didn't talk to at the Senior Bowl, instead of talking to guys they already talked to before.

Anything to get more information on players and to make a more informed decision is good.

Worst to 1st.  Curse Reversed!

While I understand what you're saying all he really did was tell us he could pick a QB at the top of the draft...or he might not.  He gave us information but left it at the typical pre-draft smokescreen GM talk.

We could take a guy early or we may pass it up because we don't think there's a franchise guy...but we hope we find that guy.  We could take a developmental guy later in the draft...or we might not.   I loved how Caldwell worded what he said, it was a good read.  There are many ways that you could take the information he gave.  It really covers all sides of his options..just as it should at this point.

This we are in complete agreement with.  Most definitely with your first sentence.  I used to be on the take a QB bandwagon but if you don't think that guy is either a franchise guy or good enough to get things done when you need him to (Wilson in Seattle, very good fit for what that time is doing, has certain abilities that are special) then you don't take him.  Personally I don't think you take a QB in the top 3 unless you feel he's the guy with little certainty because you are passing on so much potential talent in the top 3 of most drafts.  You have almost anyone available to pick from and you cannot force a QB in that situation.  That's the beauty of the draft and scouting, there is so much involved in the process and who/when you pick them.

If Dave doesn't have confidence in the top QBs I sure as heck hope he leaves all his options open and if he thinks the team is better off with a different guy (Clowney, Mack, whoever) then he takes them.  The more talent you add to this roster the easier it will be for the QB you pick to play well.  Wilson is a good QB but does anyone really think that if he landed on the Raiders he would have taken them to a Super Bowl?  That roster is loaded with talent from all rounds of the draft.  If Caldwell feels the best option for this franchise is to stockpile talent and find the QB at a later time (whether that is later in this draft or in next years class) then I will be OK with that.  Personally Bridgewater is the only guy at the top of the QB crop that I would take and feel confident in his ability to be a top level QB.  Obviously the others may get there or may be that guy but Teddy is the one I feel confident about.

Who could blame Caldwell for not taking a QB that he doesn't have confidence in?  His job is on the line with that selection.
