Lost in the argument about the importance of a second black starting quarterback winning the Super Bowl is this fact: For the first time in NFL history a deaf player had a chance to win it. His name is Derrick Coleman and he wears #40. Now, the first deaf offensive player in NFL history is getting a Super Bowl ring. Congratulations, Derrick.

 

This is not the guy who waited until the third round to get picked because he is short. This is the guy who was not even drafted because he can't hear, got cut after three preseason games, and went from one practice squad to another before finally being put on Seattle's active roster. That is impressive by itself but even more so for a guy who needed an MRI to gain clearance to play football because he is legally deaf.

 

I don't understand why nobody else seems to care about this. If you don't think this is a major accomplishment worthy of praise, something is wrong with you.

I"m kinda confused as to why you don't think this is an awesome accomplishment.  You know how hard it was to even get picked up on a team for him and you're acting like it was a small accomplishment.  There's people who have all of their senses in tact and still don't' make the team.  Furthermore the fact that he's a fullback is even more so an accomplishment. It's not like you're on defense and just watch the ball get snapped as your que, He's behind the Qb and they can't give any ques, so if something is blocking his view if he's not instantly off the ball he's already behind a step.  I have no restrictions but I think it's a D bag move to say that it isn't special or try to demean it in any way.  Think about all of the children and teenagers that are trying that have his same circumstances.  This now gives them living proof that if they work hard and stick with it they can accomplish their dream if it's to play a professional sport.

Hard work and dedication will get just about achieve whatever anyone is working for. To be a professional football player you need to work hard and keep at it no matter what. Doesn't matter wether your deaf or not. It can happen and this man proved it. You said it yourself. You want to label me a d bag. I'm sorry you feel that way. Definitely. It also is a self-esteem helper, especially for kids who get picked on because of their hearing aids.

 

That is why he starred in a Duracell commercial - to show everybody you can prove people wrong and do what you want to do even if you have a handicap.

I think he should be on A Football Life. The link I posted is for the whole story from losing hearing in his left ear to winning the NFC Championship. Ironically the reason he started playing football is the reason he did not get drafted. His mom got the idea after mean kids attacked him in a park and took his hearing aids out.

I dont see it as a big of an accomplishment as you keep trying to make it be, and its probably the same for most since "no one is making a big deal about it."  He wears hearing aids and CAN hear, so its not like hes 100% deaf. He said "10 being normal hearing, im a 6,7, or 8 depending on the day." Congratulations on overcoming an obstacle and winning the superbowl.
