Have been watching alot of tape on qb's and Mettenberger looks like a pro qb to me. Seldom scrambles, stands tall in the pocket, rocket arm, throws lots of deep balls. Were it not for his acl tear he would be right with teddy and manziel imo. Would second round be too high to take him with his injury? I did read that his rehab is ahead of schedule and will be ready for full workouts before the draft. LSU offensive coordinator Cam Cameron said “The ability to manage the running game, the play action game – which go hand-in-hand – and the ability to make vertical down-the-field throws, that’s going to hold up in college and it’ll definitely hold up in the National Football League. Once teams are comfortable with Mettenberger’s injury and background, they’ll see the positives. Mettenberger possesses prototype size. He has the strongest arm in the draft class. He throws with anticipation. He displays toughness in the pocket. And he performed well in a pro-style offense. Great arm. Good size. Bad mobility. Injury questionable. Character questionable, if I recall. Better-than-average accuracy. Don't know about his mental game. Often compared to Flacco, which I think is a pretty good fit. If he was healthy he might be a second, but coming off his ACL, no more than a third, IMO.

I'm not so sure that draft position for mettenburger is a reflection on talent.


I for one admit to not being very knowledgable on mettenburger. But I think that if he can be had in a later round then perhaps it is worth the risk.


I'm not so sure that many teams are going to be thinking about him until much later round say fourth- sixth, due to his injury alone. I don't think he would be worth the reach in the second.


Now if he starts blowing people away in workouts then maybe things could change.


I've only watched him three times, one was against Georgia where I thought looked impressive. Another against tcu, which was the first game and I came away unimpressed, and the third against florida where he wasn't asked to do a whole lot.

I believe it would be good value.

 

His injury is recoverable, so you're getting a QB who probably would have been a first round talent in the second round.  He holds his own in comparison to his peers in this draft class, and would among those at the top if it weren't for being injured, IMO.

The intriguing thing about Mettenberger to me is how much he blossomed once he got high caliber coaching in the form of Cam Cameron. Now, that he did so well under that coaching might just be a coincidence, or it might be that his previous coaches did not know how to reach him.

 

He has the physical tools to be effective. Was it a coaching issue with him or was it simply that he was in a groove that may not be repeatable?

He is one of the later QBs who has the potential to be a franchise QB, but it's a small chance maybe like 10-20%. He has the size and arm but not much else. He is just all around too sluggish in every way. Obviously very immobile, but also a slow drop back, slow arm motion, slow processing and decision making. Maybe if he was allowed to pop a greenie before every game haha.

 

He has ok accuracy, but not good placement. That means he gets it close enough to let his WRs make plays on the ball (which Beckham and Landry were both afrigginmazing at), but he doesn't make the plays easy for the WR. It's comparable to control vs command with a baseball pitcher. He won't walk many people, but he doesn't hit the corners either...ya know.

 

I would not be happy with him until day 3.

Mettenberger was thought by some to be the 3rd or 4th best QB in this draft, before his knee injury. Knee injuries heal nowadays. I like him better than Murray, Fales, McCarron, and some of the other next tier QBs. If they go with Clowney in round 1, Mettenberger would be a decent round 2 or 3 selection.

He reminds me of a less athletic Gabbert with better pocket awareness. He has a great arm, but ive seen him throw some passes that have you scratching your head. He is trying to play like Ole Brett Favre without the Brett Favre talent. Still..fourth would be a good spot, he looks like he can be coached. Only problem is his alcohol past. We dont need another good talent that plays four games a season due to bad choices.
