So the knock on Dalton is official
|
![]() So will he Manning it up and break out of the funk, or is he mediocrity perpetuated as TMD has claimed in the past! Make your cases! Yes, it's improvement, but it's Blaine Gabbert 2012 level improvement. - Pirkster The Home Hypnotist! Media on the Brain Link! Quote:Peyton must store oxygen in that forehead of his. I think people put a lot of pressure on QBs, especially this day in age. He was only in his third year. He has gotten better every year (real improvement).
Quote:I think people put a lot of pressure on QBs, especially this day in age. He was only in his third year. He has gotten better every year (real improvement). Has he gotten better, though? Having marginally better stats isn't an indication of getting better if he still gets creamed every time his team comes up against a team with a roster good enough to put the pressure on him to be the difference maker. And that's really what the problem with Dalton boils down to, he's a game manager. He doesn't make plays to take control of and win games and he likely never will. He'll always only be as good as the team around him, and for a team like the Jaguars he'd look like he's a bad QB.
His playoff stats are pretty bad.
6 interceptions, and just 1 passing touchdown. I know people picked on Ryan for the same thing, but Ryan at least had a 70+ passer rating. The Bengals are built pretty well, which allows him to win in the regular season. A head coaching change might help him get the monkey off his back. But I don't think he's the long-term solution for the Bengals.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.

Quote: he still gets creamed every time his team comes up against a team with a roster good enough to put the pressure on him to be the difference maker. ^ This is not actually true. He has been bad in the playoffs, no doubt. But, this season he beat: Patriots Packers (with Rodgers) Colts Chargers (in San Diego) Lions Ravens Steelers Those were some teams that "had a roster good enough to put the pressure on him." He didn't get creamed.
Quote:^ This is not actually true. He has been bad in the playoffs, no doubt. Maybe you think I meant pressure in the direct pass rush sense. That wasn't what I meant. I meant a team that was good enough to shut down the rest of his team and force him to be the difference maker from the QB position. Those were all good teams, but none of them had a better roster than the Bengals have. The Bengals were good enough to win matchups all over the field. When that didn't happen Dalton couldn't be the guy to tilt the game in his team's favor. Quote:Maybe you think I meant pressure in the direct pass rush sense. That wasn't what I meant. I meant a team that was good enough to shut down the rest of his team and force him to be the difference maker from the QB position. In now way I'm saying Dalton is a great QB (his worst moments are in big/clutch games). But, there were a couple stretches of games this season where he played extremely well. I'm pretty sure he went 4 1/2 games without throwing a pick, or turning it over. And, he had a stretch of games he was really racking up some yards/TDs. I'm a Bengals fan (attend 4-5 home games a year, and watch all other games on TV). Of course, I'd love to see the Bengals have a better QB. But, Dalton has also been very good at times. He completely falls apart during big games, and on primetime. That's his really big issue.
Dalton's big issues are his pocket presence has regressed every year, he has zero ability to read the middle of the field, and he can't challenge the intermediate sidelines consistently because he has average velocity. He can beat you with the short game, intermediate inside the hashes (but also where he gets punished with his mistakes), and the occasional jump ball deep pass to Green.
All in all, he's a fine rookie contract QB for a good team. Unfortunately, his rookie contract is almost up and the Bengals are going to almost be forced to give him a Jay Cutleresque deal that will kill their salary cap and cost them their great defense. That's when QB purgatory kills ya, when it's time for that second contract and you suddenly have a very expensive average QB. We show less advertisements to registered users. With Hue Jackson being promoted to Bengals Offensive Coordinator, the 2014 season likely will determine Andy Dalton's future. If Dalton fails to elevate his play in big games with Jackson like was the case under Jay Gruden, the Bengals will almost have to look for a better option moving forward. The playoff loss to the Chargers was far from only Dalton's fault but he contributed greatly to what transpired that afternoon.

You know how hard it's going to be to let go of the QB that 'led' them to the playoffs all four of his years in the league? That's what I mean by QB purgatory being so dangerous. He's going to get $125 million like Cutler, and the Bengals are going to wind up very regretful very soon as they have to lose many of the players that truly led them to the playoffs go elsewhere in FA because they gave an average QB a very big pay day.
Dalton's criticism is mostly unwarranted.
"You do your own thing in your own time. You should be proud."
Dalton still has plenty of time to develop his game. His post-season numbers stink, but at least he got there. That's a good sign for a young QB still finding his way in the NFL. That said, he needs to show improvement before any of this chatter goes away.
Only a chump boos the home team!

It's amazing how Dalton gets all this flak, but the same folk don't have a bad word to say about Luck.

Providing the Bengals don't absorb substantial personnel losses this off-season, I certainly agree with you that the Bengals will enter the 2014 season with a high caliber roster. Not counting the QB position, which of course is the most important position on an NFL team, I thought the Bengals had the best roster in the AFC in 2013. If the Bengals make the playoffs in 2014 and Andy Dalton has a similar performance as his first 3 playoff game appearances, with the Bengals losing again, I think they have to make it a priority to make a major move at the QB position in 2015. Whether that's drafting a QB in the first 2 rounds or making a trade for a QB, they won't be able to stay on course with Andy Dalton. Let alone sign him to a lucrative contract extension. Unless Dalton is a major factor in helping the team go deep into the playoffs, they would be making a mistake paying him anything close to what Jay Cutler is going to get from the Bears. Under the scenario that Dalton doesn't take a major step or more forward, the only way he should be re-signed is under the Bengals terms.

Unfortunately, recent history shows us that teams are completely paranoid about giving up on a 'franchise' QB and will give them mega contracts rivaling the Manning/Brees/Brady/Rodgers tier, a la Cutler, Stafford, Romo, Rivers all having cap restricting deals. I expect Dalton to be the next, but I hope the Bengals are smarter than the others. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! I wish I could say this is surprising but it's not. Fun fact: The Bengals are the team with the longest playoff victory drought. It has been 24 years since they have won a Playoff game.
