John McClain with the Houston Chronicle believes the Texans will select...
|
Blake Bortles
Here's his reasoning: He doesn't believe they truly want Clowney because he doesn't necessarily fit what they do on defense. He believes the franchise thinks it was a QB away from contention and that's what they'll be targeting. So, why Bortles? O'Leary was mentor to O'Brien. O'Brien was beaten by Bortles led UCF on his home turf, and raved about Bortles performance. O'Brien recruited and started a big QB at PSU. John felt that if they wanted to fill seats, they would be looking at Manziel - but that's not what they need. Added that Jacksonville might be a good place for him to go, and that his challenge is meeting teams face to face and ensuring them his lifestyle isn't going to be a liability. He didn't put Bridgewater in the equation, said a QB selection would likely be between the other two. IMO, his opinion suggested to me that Bortles appeared to have the "in" because of the ties between the coaches and preference for a larger QB. I don't necessarily agree with him but he makes a compelling argument, with such strong ties between O'Brien and O'Leary. That, of course, would also depend on if O'Leary is selling Bortles to O'Brien and how much input he'll have in the war room.

I think they trade for Mallett and go with a Defesive player or trade back from the spot. In the perfect world for them they trade 2nd for Mallett then trade the first pick to tampa or atlanta so they get clowney and pick up a 2nd and 1st next year. Then take Barr, Mack or Robinson
At first I thought the title read John McCain. I was impressed he held down a job in Houston and D.C.
That being said, it makes as much sense as anything else I have heard.

Taken with a grain of salt.
I can't tell you how many 1st round draft picks Vic Ketchman predicted to the Jaguars only to be off by a mile. And he was probably the most tied in reporter the Jags ever had.

Quote:Taken with a grain of salt. Not with Tyson Alualu. When he had the right information and not speculating, he was solid. I think that's what shrouds what the Texans might do in mystery. New coach, new direction. So he may not have a clue which way they're going, even if his logic is sound. But what made it a little more convincing is that he presented this as possibly the feeling of the owner, too. Having such an inside track on Bortles, that would make me less comfortable drafting him at #3 if they pass knowing what they know. That would be like Harbaugh passing on Luck in favor of another QB if he had the pick.

Teams are floating all sorts of stuff right now, and the overwhelming majority of it is smoke and mirrors.
Never argue with idiots. They drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.

Did Vic ever actually name Tyson as a guy the Jaguars wanted early? The best Jaguars.com "projection"/total screw-up I can remember was back in 2007, when the team's website randomly went live with a front page saying that Reggie Nelson was the team's first-round pick, as if the selection had already been made. I tend to pay more attention to stuff being said right now about the draft than I would stuff said after the combine. Right now, there's a remote chance that you're actually getting real info and gut feelings about players from inside the building. Once the combine hits, forget about it. 100% smokescreens all the way.
Quote:At first I thought the title read John McCain. I was impressed he held down a job in Houston and D.C. Don't feel bad. The John McClain I thought he was talking about was Bruce Willis's John McClane.
I was wrong about Trent Baalke.
Quote:Teams are floating all sorts of stuff right now, and the overwhelming majority of it is smoke and mirrors. True. Everyone wants to pressure everyone else to make the sort of idiotic mistakes the Jaguars have repeatedly made. Getting scared of losing some marginal talent and drafting them way too high, or scaring other teams into trading up for a guy they fell in love with no that other team is actually going to take early. Quote:As much as I was reading Jaguars.com back then, how did I miss this? Did Vic ever actually name Tyson as a guy the Jaguars wanted early? He threw out the hint on the Wednesday radio show leading into draft weekend. Yeah, he really liked Spiller and Wells, too but I think those were more his personal desire rather than what he thought was going to actually happen.

I don't think a new front office is going to want to put their future in the hands of a QB who hasn't started a game in a while and who they didn't vet like they are with these rookies.

So we get Bridgewater at the 3rd, Perfect
Blackmon will be back, CS3 as the primary weapons Tre Mason in the second, a TE in the 3rd We become an offensive juggernaut
However I would take McClains word for a grain of salt, everything said now is apart of giant deception campaign

These days, it's backing up Brady that makes you worth your weight in draft cards. Quote:Manziel will drop to the 2-3 round, not worried about him Not a chance. Some team will fall in love with him. He may fall to late in the first but some team will trade back up to get him. If Tebow and Manuel are first round picks then Manziel is a lock.

if the texans draft Bortles #1 overall I feel like the GM will get fired the next year.... that's a HUGE reach
