$1 Billion Dollars for a "Perfect" March Madness Bracket

#1
(This post was last modified: 01-21-2014, 08:07 PM by enigma.)

From Business Insider:

Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway and Dan Gilbert's Quicken Loans are partnering to award anyone who fills out a perfect 2014 Men's NCAA Tournament bracket with $1 billion.

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">The prize will be paid out in 40 annual installments of $25 million. If there's more than one winner they'll have to share. The winner or winners can also take or split up an immediate $500 million lump sum payment.

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">"It is our mission to create amazing experiences for our clients. This contest, with the possibility of creating a billionaire, definitely fits that bill," Jay Farner, President and Chief Marketing Officer of Quicken Loans said in a statement. He added: "We've seen a lot of contests offering a million dollars for putting together a good bracket, which got us thinking, what is the perfect bracket worth? We decided a billion dollars seems right for such an impressive feat."

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">In addition to the grand prize, Quicken will award $100,000 each to the contest's 20 most accurate 'imperfect' brackets submitted by qualified entrants in the contest to use toward buying, refinancing or remodeling a home. Quicken will also donate $1 million to inner-city Detroit and Cleveland non-profit organizations. Quicken is based in Detroit, but Gilbert owns the Cleveland Cavaliers and the city's Horseshoe Casino.

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">The odds are not ideal — a 1 in 9.2 quintillion chance.

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">But it costs nothing to fill out so you should probably do it. The contest starts March 3rd. "March Madness" kicks off March 18.

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Why not give it a try?

<p style="color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif;font-size:15px;">Oh, and I will accept 10% of the winnings if any of you lovelies manage to strike it rich!  Banana

We all should just do it. Unlike the lottery, it's free and it will make the awful sporting month of march (in my opinion) slightly more enjoyable. I have a feeling someone will win.

March Madness alone makes the month AWESOME! Filling bracket/s out only makes it better!

I'd be willing to bet anyone who'd take it that no one will win this offer.

I know, I know...everyone loves march madness. Unfortunately I have never been able to get into it. I've tried...I just can't. So see it from my perspective. Outside of college basketball the only other sport worth watching is the NBA and in march the games are practically meaningless. The playoff teams have mostly been set. I hate march Sad Sad

Okay, so here's the plan.

Congress fills out a bracket.  We then rig the games, and use that money to pay off the national debt a little.

Excellent idea. Do you have any other ideas for the remaining 99.999942%?

You don't pay off the entire national debt.  Around 66% of the national debt is owed to the United States.  Things like the Federal Reserve, Social Security, Etc...

One thing that could be done to decrease spending would be to take some of the unused properties owned by the government and sell them, or turn them into low-rent housing for low income families.  Selling the properties would eliminate the spending on utilities for those unused properties.  And making low-rent housing available would decrease spending on properties (if not eliminate it entirely depending on the viability)

...Also Survivor: Congress edition.  16 senators stranded on an island for 31 days.

I don't think there's ever been one.   IF every game is a 50-50 chance, then the odds are 1 in 9.2 quintillion, that is 1 in 9,200,000,000,000,000,000.   Those odds are unfathomable.

The odds of winning powerball are 1 in 259,000,000.   So you have better odds of winning the powerball twice in a row, than in winning this perfect bracket challenge.

My luck, I'd get the entire bracket right up until the Championship game and then lose on a foul call/ free throws with 0.4 seconds remaining in a previous 1 point lead at that point....
