Lions sign another former Jag ( LB Julian Stanford )

Detroit Lions sign yet another ex-Jag, Julian Stanford, to take Travis Lewis' roster spot
http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/201...other.html I'm guessing that in large part, the experience and exposure Julian Stanford gained under former Jaguars Special Teams Coordinator John Bonamego in 2012, is why the Lions signed Julian Stanford to replace Travis Lewis for at least the short term. Bonamego is the current Lions Special Teams Coordinator. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I don't recognize either of those names and never would have guessed they are former Jaguars.
It seems like the Lions are the Jaguars North when you count the number of guys who moved from Jacksonville to Detroit in recent years. Quote: It's much like the Jaguars being Seattle South except the Lions HC doesn't have any connections to the Jaguars organization. Back when Rod Marinelli was the Lions Head Coach, many former Bucs ended up with the Lions. Back then, it was Tampa Bay North.

But that makes no sense because the former Jaguars are on offense and defense. Quote:Apparently the special teams coordinator is good enough lol. But that makes no sense because the former Jaguars are on offense and defense. Julian Stanford likely won't see a down on Defense this season but could be on the Game Day roster for Special Teams purposes one or more weeks before the regular season ends. Another current Lions Assistant Coach that was on the Jaguars coaching staff in the same capacity in 2012 is Tight Ends Coach Bobby Johnson. Assistant Coaches see enough in practice and on practice tapes that they are equipped to make recommendations to the G.M. and Head Coach. We show less advertisements to registered users. D6, thanks for the update.
I've always pulled for Stanford, due to his ties to Wagner College. Hope he sticks.

Quote:D6, thanks for the update. My pleasure, Adam. Prior to Julian Stanford, the only NFL player and/ or coach from Wagner College that I recall making an impact in the NFL is former Eagles and Jets HC Rich Kotite. While Kotite didn't have the type of success he hoped for as a HC, from a character standpoint he's a top notch person. On the other side of the coin, back when Kotite was Jets Offensive Coordinator, when Joe Walton was their HC, the Jets had a Wagner RB named Terry Underwood in their Training Camp. Underwood didn't make it with the Jets after a stellar career with Wagner but he had a CFL career. Tragically, Underwood became most famous for being convicted of murdering his pregnant wife. Wagner College is the first time I became familiar with the nickname ' Seahawks'. Quote:My pleasure, Adam. I was born in Staten Island (didn't stay there long before moving to Florida) and my Dad took a course or two there. When I wear my Wagner sweatshirt hardly anyone has a clue as to where, or what, Wagner is all about.

He also took courses at Wagner College. One of the stories I remember him sharing with me is that prior to the Verrazano Bridge being build, the mode of transportation to get from Brooklyn to Staten Island was ferry service. Quote:I was born in Staten Island (didn't stay there long before moving to Florida) and my Dad took a course or two there. As a Wagner alum, I go through the same thing when meeting new people/interviewing. "Where'd you go to college?" "Wagner." "What? Where?" Good for Stanford though. Good guy. Was waiting/hoping for him to get picked up by someone.

Cool. Wagner has often played Jacksonville University in football. I look for Wagner's results in the agate type every Sunday. Around here (Jacksonville) Wagner might as well be some sort of secret society.

I still have a bunch of great aunts and uncles in the New York area, and my niece lives in Brooklyn. It took a while, but apparently Brooklyn is cool again. Ah yes, I remember the Staten Island ferry. Kind of famous and always seems to show up in any movie about New York city.

I think most people who commute to the school drive, but, the school requires almost every student to have at least 1 internship before graduating, and a lot of students will take the ferry into the city for that internship. I actually took an internship in Brooklyn. Had to take a shuttle from the dorms to the ferry, the ferry, and then a subway from the ferry terminal to a few blocks away from the office. Was quite a trip to make twice a week for a semester. <_< Quote:A Wagner alum! Cool. Heh. I seem to remember looking up Jacksonville U while bored at school one night, and apparently its almost a clone of Wagner except down in Florida, if I remember. Kinda small school, big business and nursing programs, same school colors. Being a Jags fan, I regretted not just going to JU and being closer to the team. Was beyond awesome when Stanford signed with the Jags, of all teams. There was another guy who signed with him that year, but I didn't really know him, so that was less exciting. At least Wagner's quite a ways from Jacksonville, so being a secret society is explainable. I still live in NY and Wagner's basically a secret society up here too. <_< We should have a secret handshake or something.

Quote:I still have a bunch of great aunts and uncles in the New York area, and my niece lives in Brooklyn. It took a while, but apparently Brooklyn is cool again. One of the great sports memories my Dad shared with me was what life in Brooklyn was when the Dodgers were still there. The impression I got from him and what I've read and seen over the years is that Brooklyn had a small town atmosphere when it came to the Dodgers. The players lived in Brooklyn neighborhood and were very recognizable. The passion of the Brooklyn Dodgers fan base was incredible. While I don't think the modern day Brooklyn Nets will ever have the type of following that the Dodgers did, there's no question that the presence of the Nets and the entire Atlantic Yards/ Barclays Center project should further enhance Brooklyn as a place that many want to be a part of again. The modern day Staten Island Ferry connects Staten Island and Manhattan. I believe that's the ferry that is seen in most movies about NYC. I'm not sure what the old ferry service from Staten Island to Brooklyn was called. But there was certainly a time when that was basically the only mode of public transportation from Staten Island to Brooklyn. Quote:Ah, the ferry. On the plus side, back then at least you didn't have to deal with the typical commute automobile/ truck traffic that's in NYC and most major sized cities.
I think Stanford was long after the Shack Harris era so this is more coincidental
Gene's Myth
Quote:I think Stanford was long after the Shack Harris era so this is more coincidental I'm not sure how much weight from the input of Shack Harris that Lions G.M Martin Mayhew put into the decision making process in signing Montell Owens and Rashean Mathis this year. Owens and Mathis are the only current Lions that were in Jacksonville when Shack Harris was still the Jaguars G.M. All of the other former Jaguars that have been with the Lions this season came to Jacksonville after Harris was out of the Jaguars picture. Even Don Carey didn't come to the Jaguars until 2009, months after the Harris era ended in Jax. Shack Harris is a Senior Personnel Executive with the Lions but has had a very low public profile since coming to Detroit in the winter of 2009. I can't even recall Harris being interviewed even one time by a media member that covers the Lions. The only time I recall seeing a Harris quote since he came to Detroit was when former Baltimore Ravens Owner Art Modell passed away in September, 2012. Harris of course worked for Art Modell in Baltimore before coming to Jacksonville in 2003. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today! Quote:i hope all the best for julian. he seems like he can ball. Julian Stanford was interviewed yesterday and mentioned something that I caught my attention that relates to the ongoing discussion about winning vs. tanking. Stanford implied that the Jaguars locker room was an unpleasant place last season because the morale in the locker room was down because of all of the losing. It sure seems to me that young players develop better in a more upbeat atmosphere. http://www.mlive.com/lions/index.ssf/201...nford.html Quote:Julian Stanford was interviewed yesterday and mentioned something that I caught my attention that relates to the ongoing discussion about winning vs. tanking. I would think young ballplayers are like the rest of us - they'd like some positive reinforcement. If all you see is losing I would think you'd start to doubt your abilities, even though you keep telling yourself it's a team game, etc. I bet the Jaguars locker room is more positive than that of the Texans' right now. (Can you believe that going into Week 14 last year the Texans were 11-1, as were the Falcons.) Talk about a year to year league.
