Meriweather Suspended For Hits, Says "He'll Have To Take Players' Knees Out"
|
The NFL is fighting a losing battle. When will they realize that this is a violent game? Unless they completely remove equipment, and put flags on, it is next to impossible to eliminate everything.

While it is impossible to eliminate all contact, Meriweather doesn't have to tackle the way he does. And I'll add, It's not really good for his own head to constantly use it as a battering ram.
It might be time to go "scared straight" with headhunters, and have them all spend an afternoon with former Bears QB Jim McMahon.
The OP's response really has nothing to do with what Merriweather said. Most defenders have been able to adjust their style from these types of hits. He's just a jerk out to hurt people. I'm willing to bet there are many on his team that will have a talk with him on this.
Merriweather is a punk and next time he does something illegal I hope he's suspended a year.
Merriweather is a "dirty" hitter, intentional or not. However, I do agree that the NFL is taking it too far. You can't go low, you can't go high, I mean we are inching towards two-hand touch football.

You can't go low, you can't go high, I mean we are inching towards two-hand touch football. I feel you're going from one extreme to the other. There are other ways to tackle someone. Especially a player who is in the air. Leading in with a helmet shot to the neck up should be unacceptable to players in vulnerable situations. Tackle with your body/arms like they were taught since day one. I personally don't feel the NFL is taking it too far on the helmet hits like Merriweather is delivering. Considering the NFL is the one responsible with lawsuits for the players actions and not the player making the tackle. I understand the fans including myself don't want the game to soften up. But you have to protect defenseless players at the same time.
I see nothing wrong with what he said. He's right.

Quote:I see nothing wrong with what he said. He's right. There is a difference in tackling a player with your helmet in certain conditions vs leading in with a helmet shot at a guy who is defenseless multiple times. He can wrap with his arms and tackle with the body in those situations. Not aim at breaking his neck. His comment is clearly ignorant. NFL is the one responsible for the other players liability not him. If he doesn't wanna play by the rules that they feel are necessary maybe he can find a new profession. They are hitting them in the chest and still being called for Unn, Roughness or Helmet-helmet contact. It's ridiculous. Stop defending this new wussy league that Goddell has created. It's pathetic. You want to get paid millions of dollars? It's your choice to play this game. It's your choice to make the risk of doing something risky as a profession. I wonder if the helmet causes more injuries than it prevents.
Rugby players are much better at tackling than NFL players due to the fact they can't lead with their heads and have to tackle with proper form
Quote:I wonder if the helmet causes more injuries than it prevents. I think that is spot on. The helmets are allowing players to feel invincible when making tackles and they are leading with them. If they removed them all together I believe you would see Mr. Merriweather have a different approach on Michael Bennett's tackle.

But when the NFL is the one sufferring from the lawsuit of the players being injured due to concussions they will make rule changes to try and prevent it. I agree some of the calls are definitely suspect of "helmet to helmet" I'm not declining that. But what Merriweather has been delievering is not head to chest. He's been warned, appeal reversed and he's still leading with it. I don't have any sympathy for him getting suspended. He just needs to realize hes not just hurting other players but also himself. He'll be laid up talking stupid if he keeps allowing his head to take blows like that. What is he going to do then? Try to sue the NFL like every other player is doing.
I love the term "Defenseless" in football. It makes no sense at all.

Offensive players lower their helmets all the time. Where's the outrage with that?
Still agree with the notion that defenseless players can defend themselves by not running that route.
His response to Marshal made me LOL though.
"Merriweather: He feel like i need to be kicked out of the league? I feel like people who beat their girlfriends should be kicked out too." http://bleacherreport.com/articles/18192...ety-policy
