OMG Detroit

#1

Trapped at work away from any chance of seeing Jax play today, I got to see another incredibly boring Giants game up here in Giantsland.

However, after Barkley threw the game away for the Eagles, Fox sent us to Detroit to watch the last couple minutes of the Dallas victory.  Except, that's not what happened.  Instead, with less than a minute remaining, Matt Stafford drove about 65 yards to tie the game with a Marino-esque fake spike.  Thats after throwing for 488 yards.  Congrats to his "fantasy" owners.

Detroit turned the ball over 4 times to Dallas's 0, and are now the 2nd team ever to overcome a -4 turnover differential.

Your starting point for game review

Might wind up being the play of the year.  Congrats Detroit.

They switched over to that game here in Jax after the Jags game was over. I'm happy to see Detroit take down the boys!

Always happy to see D6's Lions notch a win. Seeing them both  beat the 'boys and make them look silly was a hoot...

Stafford was great on that last drive, but no way Detroit has a chance in this game without Calvin.  Man, the way he consistently catches those jump balls in triple coverage in breathtaking.

Thanks,  86,   anonymous2112,  and everyone for your thoughts.     This game was easily in the top 10 Lions comebacks I've seen in my lifetime.      It was a near football miracle for the Lions to comeback and win this game.    Cowboys LT Tyson Smith,  who is a high quality young player,   made a mega mistake by holding DE Devin Taylor on a 3rd Down running play when the Lions had no timeouts left.     Though Dan Bailey kicked a 44 yard FG to make the score 30-24,   it gave the Lions Offense a little over a minute to go 80 yards.     In addition to Matthew Stafford and Calvin Johnson coming up huge on that drive,    Stafford's UGA teammate,   WR Kris Durham,   caught a 40 yard pass down the left sidelines.    Durham has improved noticeably in recent games and has come up big in some key spots this season.

Three former Jaguars deserves high praise for their performances today:

1.  Rashean Mathis.    While he was partially responsible for Dez Bryant's 2nd TD,    Mathis'  coverage was a key factor in keeping the Lions in the game during the time frame of the Lions 4 turnovers.    When Mathis has been relatively healthy this season,  he's been the Lions best and most consistent CB.   He's clearly the best former Jags player to play for the Lions in the last several years.    Even at the advanced football age of 33.

2.  Don Carey.    Nickel Back Bill Bentley was injured in the game.   Carey performed better as a replacement in that role than anyone could have realistically expected.   He also continues to perform well on Special Teams Coverage.

3.  C.J. Mosley.     It won't show up on the stat sheet but Mosley had two key pressures on Tony Romo.    I recall at least one of them being on 3rd Down.     Mosely's impact was in the 2nd half,  after Nick Fairley was limited because of an injury.

On the other side of the coin from a Lions perspective,   former Jaguars and Lions LB Justin Durant,  who seems like a part time player on the Cowboys Defense,   recovered Reggie Bush's fumble.

Didn't the Jaguars turn the ball over 6 times and still beat the Browns or something like that?

That's what that game reminded me of.

THERE IS A SKELETON INSIDE OF YOU.

RIGHT NOW. THIS IS NOT A JOKE.

I think he meant the 2nd team to overcome a -4 takeaway/ turnover ratio since the start of the 2011 season.     There were either 54 or 55 teams in that time span that lost when turning the ball over at least 4 times more than they had takeaways.

I will be surprised if that last drive is not named Drive of the Week. Matthew Stafford's jump over the offensive line should definitely be a Never Say Never Moment of the Week candidate.

Who would have guessed the Cowboys killed themselves by scoring a field goal when the Lions had no timeouts left?

As a Cowboys hater, I loved seeing Dez Bryant scream at a teammate after that touchdown. It is always great to see them mad.

The play caller said during the game only one team in NFL history ever won a game with a -4 turnover margin - Atlanta against Arizona last year - making Detroit the second team.

According to the following site,   it was indeed from 2011 on that this stat applies:

Since 2011, teams are 1-54 in games where they are -4 turnovers or more. The Lions have lost 38 of their last 39 games when turning the ball over at least four times.

Fox had the correct information.       If you have access to the NFL Network,   they likely will have a 90 minute version of this game on Tuesday or Wednesday.      They might show the graphic again.

They said NFL history, not "since 2011."

At least once on the telecast,  it was listed as 2011.      Otherwise,   I never would have known even to look for the link I provided above.

I think Calvin Johnson may be the best player in football.
