Anyone recommend an AC company?

#1

AC was freezing up. Added freon and it worked fine for about a month, then started to freeze again. Checked filters, etc. I'm assuming a slow leak.

Anyway, with so many fly by night companies out there, and constant name changes, can anyone recommend a reliable company to call?

Thanks.

How about that company with the billboards that just say "Your wife is hot"? Go with them, they have a sense of humor.

I would recommend a service appointment with the manufacturer of the AC unit being that they are most familiar with the product.

Is the unit (or service parts in question) under warranty?

Try Synder if the first option is too pricey, also search for coupons online or in Mint Magazine. Any AC repair company will take them.

It could be that your heater isn't coming on like it's supposed to. That's what happened to my mom's A/C about 10 years ago. If that is the problem, it should be a simple fix.

Whoever you get keep an eye on them. There are some unscrupulous companies/people who will put a crimp/cut in your line and then charge you for about $600.00 worth of Freon after they make the "repair".

I understand. That's why I'm asking. The last company we used no longer exists, or if it does, under a different name.

The Snyder name seems legit, as I've def heard of them and they've been around a while.

I live at the beach and use Donavon Heat and Air. It's  a $104.50 diagnostic. They will explain their rates if you call them. They are not cheap but have shown up and fixed the issues I have had.

You can check out waycoffs (sp) I haven't used them but know someone that uses them all the time and talks them up. Wouldn't hurt to call them as well if your going to be shopping around.

A freezing air handler is caused by one of two things:

A. Low freon - This is the likely cause. You had it topped off a month ago for the same problem, and it fixed it. Now, you have the problem back. This is the most likely cause.

B. Insufficient airflow through the air handler.  - This is less likely, but if you have a severely plugged a/c filter or a weak fan, the coils of the air handler will freeze. I doubt this is your problem, but it is technically possible.

If you rent, it's no big deal. Call and have them fix it. If you own, the best thing is to shop around. Most compainies are going to try to sell you a complete new system. It's sort of like transmission shops that way. Ask a lot of questions before scheduling a service call. Know a little about your a/c unit before calling too. (Age, make, etc) It does make a difference with how service companies treat you.

Finally, keep in mind that winter is coming. Consider getting a window unit for the hot days remaining, and putting off the service until later. The winter months are off peak season for a/c companies, and they are more willing to negotiate because they have a lot less work. What may cost you a lot in the summer may not cost so much in the winter.

Hope this helps. Smile

Overfill the system too 137psi (Propane works best)... Drink 2 bottles of Dawn, and a 12 pack of Budweiser. Then urinate on every seam in the Copper lines ... Your Wife will call the professionals tomorrow. All of them.

Looks like the evaporator coil needs replacement. I thought.. Ok.....until I hear, about $2100. What? A new system ( air handler...inside unit) is about $2500.

Dang it... Hundreds of members here... And no one does AC work? ( whine )

But thanks everyone for the suggestions.... Except Sammy... He got me in trouble. Smile

Check around the internet see if you can find that part cheaper?

edit: I just typed it into google and looks they're between $200-400 sounds like a company marking up product which I'm sure they all do, but get the model number of the AC and google the evap coil first.

Okay, we have enough help and suggestions. Back to the jokes.

Btw, I had to spend over 5k to repair(replace) an A/C that caused an additional 10K worth of damage to my house.

I hate homeownership.

If you need an evaporator coil it's because you have a leak. This usually occurs where the copper tubing penetrates the aluminum fins because of galvanic corrosion (disimilar metals). You can attempt to use some stop leak freon but most companies don't want to use that because of warranty issues.

Replacing the evaporator coil completely is quite extensive and that price sounds about right. If your condensing unit is fairly new then it's worth it to replace the evaporator coils, if not, then you might be better to replace the entire system for about $5k. This will upgrade your entire HVAC system which will save you a lot of money in energy costs. (My friend just replaced his and his electricity bill went from $400 per month to $170)

I would not use Chaddock. Period. I used Tom Chaddock for years until I discovered he was overcharging me for parts not installed and labor not performed. I have written documentation on this, and a lawsuit to prove it. I have been very satisfied lately with Bill Lee's. In my business I have 18 refrigeration and A/C units. He has been very fair in all of his service.

How come the "$10k additional damage" option wasn't offered with my new A/C? I feel ripped off now.

That's because you were probably home and were able to replace the A/C before it leaked underneath the hardwood flooring that may or may not run throughout your house. For forty days.

If you ever have to get a new AC, schedule a few companies to come to the home at the same time to provide quotes.  That way they know there is competition and will give you a lower rate.  We actually worked out a deal 2 systems w/ air handlers (15 tons energy efficient) for $7,000 when they rebates were going on -- net $6,000   ... i had to show the receipts to beaches energy and they were passing it around.

No, I would have definitely ordered the "A/C that leaks under carpet" option. Forty days? Pshhh. Stick a crowbar in your wallet and get the 90 day option. It's a better value.
