Offseason Shakeup - Would You Do It?
|
Just something fun to kick around.
WHAT IF........... The NFL did the draft first, and followed with free agency. The closest thing we've had to that were the "June cuts" of the '90s. Teams unloaded players for cap reasons and whatnot. This would be completely different in that no free agency would happen until after the draft. It would completely change the offseason strategy of all the teams and GMs. Would it be better or worse? Would it be more or less interesting?

Personally I like the idea of using free agency first to fill some holes with "proven" players. You never know how the darft is gonna shake up so you might miss out on a lot of players you were targeting and might end up with less talented players(Late round/UDFA) at the positions you had holes in.
It would be interesting to see it for one year though, just to see how that would turn out.

since we are making stuff up, what if everyone made the playoffs. i wonder if a 16th seed would make a deep playoff run and maybe win the superbowl?! lol ok im done :woot:
Quote:Just something fun to kick around. In 2011 during the NFL Lockout, the draft was held before the start of the FA period. As an NFL fan, I liked seeing the draft held first. Going for the best player available in a given draft spot is easier to accomplish under this format. Knowing that the prime Free Agent market can help fill some key needs after the draft. If given the choice, the NFL Draft would be held first again. How about we add an element of the draft to free agency. The worst team gets the first day of the FA period to negotiate exclusively with the Free Agent pool. The second worst is added to the mix on day two, 3rd on day three with each team added the following day and on and on until the first playoff team is due then the entire playoff group from the previous year comes in on day 17. Players can sign at any time and teams can sign as many as they want or can afford. I think it would be good darma to read who signed each day and watch players hold out to go to successful teams (potentially for less money).
