Maybe it's about time I check that course out.

Bring only one club with you, I use a 4-hybrid, and hit from the front (red) tees. It makes it a very pleasant walk and all you have to carry is the single club, 4-5 balls and a couple of tees (broken ones are everywhere).

Two rules for this:
   1. No sand traps. Just take the ball out and drop it somewhere no closer to the green.
   2. Everything is a 2-putt. If you get it in one putt, it counts. 2nd putt is a gimme no matter where it is.

You will become pretty adept at bump and run golf and you'll actually develop the useless skill of putting with a hybrid...plus you won't have to carry that 40 lb bag for 4 miles.

The Naval station has a golf course?

Never knew.

That’s a new one on me as well.  Not my thing but pretty damn cool.  Taking care of our Military and vets, I like it.

That sounds relaxing and fun but I don't have any hybrids. I'll have to invest in one and give it a try.
I actually walk to play golf quite a bit. There was a time not too long ago when I carried my bag. Those days are gone. I push now. Mine is like this and has hundreds of miles on it. On bad days it gets more miles.

Many military installations do. Ft. Bragg has two! What's funny is NAS Lemoore, which is a huuuge facility by Navy standards, doesn't have one. They make more money for Morale, Welfare and Recreation funds (which they share with other bases) than any other Naval installation in the country by leasing land to farmers. Typically golf courses don't pay for themselves on military bases, unless you have one in Asia, then it's a bonanza because they let the locals play.

Out of curiosity, what’s the cost of renting a cart, and the average cost of playing a round?

Out of curiosity, what’s the cost of renting a cart, and the average cost of playing a round?

That's dependent upon several factors such as time of year, time of day, day of the week, and the quality of the course. Green fees at the Slammer and Squire are a little less for Florida residents, who can still expect to pay around $100 during the summer. Fees to play on the actual TPC course in the summer can run $400-$500. But those are outliers reserved for occasional play, or by business people schmoozing clients, or tourists.
Typically what most locals pay on local public courses is anywhere from $35-$65, including cart, again dependent on time of year and day. Fees usually go down after 4:00 and in the winter time. You can walk into a local public course after 4 or 5 o'clock and pay only $15 during the week. Fees go up on the weekends. Of course, members who pay a monthly or yearly fee for differing levels of membership pay less. It's a mixed bag.

I didn’t know it was so complicated but it does make sense. .  Do you prefer pushing your clubs for the extra “exercise” or having the cart?

Man, I just checked the tee times for the 3 courses near me plus king and bear. Not seeing any available. I guess they book up in advance for the foreseeable future? Checked SH, cimarrone, St. John’s golf and county and king and bear just for [BLEEP] and giggles. Not seeing any available times online despite seeing people playing there. Is it typically hard to get a tee time?

Even in Florida, golf is somewhat seasonal and weather dependent, too hot, too cold, etc.  On weekends it's typically harder to get a tee time.  Numerous course are closed throughout the country and right now there's not exactly a lot else to do so...…...

WWW.Pinemeadowgolf.com has a sale going on right now- 60% off used clubs. They don't have a huge selection but you can get a hybrid very cheap...$20-25 plus $7 to ship it. There's different lengths and shafts to consider but they describe each club available (I just bought a 9W for 22-).

For Jags:
- Club lengths vary by height or distance from hand to ground: standard length or standard + or - 1/2, 1 inch etc. It does make a big difference. At 6-1, I get the inch added.
- Shafts come generally as Extra Stiff (pros mainly, feels to me like swinging a 2x4), Stiff, Regular, Senior (very whippy like spaghetti), Ladies flex (not sure where that falls or whether it's even relevant anymore).

Weekends are very busy right now as it's one of the few outdoor activities that hasn't been shut down in the state and many are still too busy with WFH duties during the week.

If you can take off a couple hours early on a weekday and play a round starting about 3pm, you'll find lots of options and good deals too.  SJG&C is about $32 for a 3pm round during the week I think.

@PF - Me and Rico played Magnolia yesterday. I remember you advising me to check it out. Fun round! Shot my best nine ever on the front. (41)

Let's not discuss the back nine. Rico brought lots of beer.

I couldn't be more jealous. Every NE state has shut down golf. NH was open for a bit but closed when they saw too many out-of-staters flocking up there to play.

I like Magnolia Point, the 9th hole is cool where you have to clear that marshy area on your 2nd/3rd shot to get to the green. Good hole. #2, a par 3, was way better before they recently filled in that huge trap on the right side of the green (I think it kept washing out).

Isn't outside alcohol prohibited there? Lol.

That's OK, it was all gone by the time we finished so technically we didn't have any.  Besides, I didn't think 12 was lots.  I thought it was just enough. Big Grin

It was an odd round.  All courses that are open are one person to a cart.  So it had a weird 'feel' to it yesterday.  Even though we were in a foursome we were all pretty much on our own.

I don’t golf, but the whole thing got me curious and checking out different sites. I didn’t have anything better to do

I have fond memories of the last time I played, now 2 weeks ago. There were 4 of us with bourbon, Fireball and a few beers. Ahhh, the good old days.

Interesting, thanks. Probably because of Lemoore that my perception is flawed.

We've always played much faster with our own carts. That's both good and bad.

I learned to play from my at the time father in law who learned to play during his 24 month stint on Guam. Nothing else to do so he started playing.
