Gender is determined by science.  Gender identity isn't listed on a birth certificate, or at least it isn't yet. 

The PC culture and the pendulum they've swung so far left that it's offensive to use pronouns that are not gender neutral.  Eventually things swing in the other direction, and we can go back to the utopia RJ mentioned above, ending all of this ridiculousness.

Science only matters if it's aligned with your personal opinion.  Global warming climate change is supposedly "all about the science".  Figuring out which restroom to use or which gender you are is all about "feelings".  Science (biology) has no part in it.

It's sad that things like the OP pointed out are real in today's society.  Some people really think that you can "choose" your gender.  If you call such people out you're immediately labeled as "homophobic", "racist", etc.
