First, it's not the taxpayers footing the bill (directly) it's the University of Florida.  From one of the "articles" that you linked.

Quote:And according to the Supreme Court, it’s up to the university to pay for it. Deciding on a case in 1992, Justice Harry Blackmun laid out the legal doctrine known as the “heckler’s veto.”

Speech, Blackmun wrote, “cannot be financially burdened, any more than it can be punished or banned, simply because it might offend a hostile mob.” In other words, speech can’t be prohibited because of financial issues. In Spencer’s case, that means the University of Florida is stuck with the $500,000 in security costs.

Second, the extra security is not for the speaker, it's for the "protesters" that tend to spark violence and destruction just because they don't like or agree with what the speaker has to say.

Third and finally, he didn't "protest" in Charlottesville, he was a speaker at a white supremacist rally.

The university is funded by the state, so I guess indirectly it is from tax dollars. Initially Mom just told me it will be paid for by tax payers, but later she said UF is the direct payer.

It is crazy so much money has to be spent on security for a one-day event.
