Cruz has always been very carefull with the Trump base. Doesn't want to offend the yahoos. He's positioning himself as the heir to those voters when Donald retires/quits/gets impeached and convicted/dies on a golf course/whatever.

I see Cruz and Pence fighting for the same group of voters post Trump.
