Too many players today stop performing at the same level once they get that big contract and big signing bonus in hand. That is true across the board in the NFL, and seems alarmingly persistent with out franchise here in Jax. So...
Why don't the owners push more towards contracts based more on incentives? Sales departments do it, consultants do it; hell, restaurant servers and other service workers do it. Even other major sports like golf and tennis do it. Don't make the cut? Go home unhappy. Bounced in the first round? So sorry. Instead, we reward football players for past performance with the hope that they will duplicate that same performance in the future. On average, human nature doesnt necessarily work that way. Football, baseball, basketball and hockey are almost like government entities now as far as fans are concerned; except instead of getting reamed with higher taxes and no product, fans get higher ticket prices and no product. The answer? contracts where 70 to 90% of the pay is based on incentives. My guess is that those same players would play under a contract like that since they are just playing a game that a lot of us played for nothing growing up. Maybe if their salaries were based on production the results would be different. Of course, this will never happen with the current unions and CBA's in place, but it would be nice to see what that sort of a system would produce.

No way. The NFL system is the one major sport that isn't broken. These guys get what maybe 1 big pay day in their career and they do that by sacrificing future quality of life. Free market systems don't need to be destroyed further.

Quote: Yep --- they cannot do that under this CBA since that would be considered Collusion in which the Owners could be sued tremendously for such action. New CBA -- players would never agree -- that would cause a long term strike in which both parties come out losers. Your idea would be great for the Owners & Fans !! Kaepernick is the perfect example of an active player got a 6-year contract valued at $114,000,000 then turned about to be worthless in the NFL.
It would be fun to watch d-lines if they got 10 million per sack. Dante would be offsides like...well I don't know but a lot

Whether someone has a liberal, or conservative viewpoint, a authoritative figure should not lock a thread for the sole purpose to get the last word in all the while prohibiting someone else from being able to respond.
It is incentive-based pay. It's called "after you get your guaranteed money upon signing, your [BLEEP] will get cut and you'll get no more money if you suck." Compared to other sports, where the contract money is fully guaranteed, I think NFL owners do okay.
