Cardinals Release CB/S Tyrann Mathieu

#21

This was brought up on playoff frenzy tonight on NFL network, during the Campbell segment. They basically asked if he would like to have him in Jacksonville. He lit right up.

Make it so, Cough-Well.  Send Hayden back home and make this the greatest secondary of all time.

I know it's never gonna happen.

Won't happen.  Jaguars used their cap space to sign castoffs.

Spoken like a true castoff.

That's a good sign considering Campbell surely knows Mathieu real well.

He was saying how going to a team who respects defense is more important than landing top dollar for his services. He might just find Jacksonville to his liking.

Ok... I don't know who the gunners actually were down the stretch. I always figured with his speed he'd automatically be one of them. This has me almost wondering why he's even on the roster.

Well - he did play the outside CB for a series or two late in a game one week.
(I think Colvin was dinged up and Ramsey slid inside leaving Bouye and Myrick outside, but I'm not sure I'm remembering that exactly right.)

He looked pretty good that day. Raw and unpolished, but his speed helped him recover. They did try to target him when he came in and he held up.

He's got time to get stronger and develop the technique to be a gunner. Don Carey wasn't good at it right away either - but the Lions voted him their ST MVP for three consecutive years recently.

Good thing we rushed to pay DJ Hayden that much money when Mathieu took a 1 year 7 mil deal with division rivals...

Yes I'm still salty about giving out the worst deal in this FA period, sorry.

I wouldn't be opposed to taking the best CB on the board in the first and playing him slot.

He might surprise but you can make the argument slot corner is up there with RG for weakest position on the starting team right now.

Damn, going to the Texans. I'm a big fan of Mathieu, he's had some horrible luck with injuries but he's due a good year. Add Colvin and if Johnson can step up then Houston's secondary looks improved. If they can keep Watt healthy that will make a huge difference for them.

Not too sure about how the South is shaping up. Looks like it could be 4 strong teams.

Well hopefully BB5 learns how to not to throw the ball directly to him when he is 5 yards in front of him... at least he didn't go to the tacks, i guess.

1yr-7M... for a true proven beast playmaker ... and we got stuck paying more for a guy who has been downright atrocious... lol. The Hayden deal was by far the worst deal all FA. Even if he plays all pro in the future it doesn't justify paying for the current body of work Hayden has provided thus far.

The Hayden deal was by far the worst deal all FA.

There was competition with the Ryan Grant deal the Ravens gave out, but then after they got utterly destroyed by the analysts/media/social media/etc they found a convenient way to fail his physical and sign the just released Michael Crabtree. Now it is the Hayden deal along that stands heads and shoulders above the rest.

He came in for the second half of the Bengals game after Ramsey was ejected at the end of the first half.
I think that Colvin went outside and Myrick was nickel for like a dozen snaps. They went after him a bit but he didn't allow a completion, I remember Marrone praising him after the game.

He clearly has to improve (they admitted that much when they kept him on the roster, he's here because of potential, his current level wouldn't have warranted him a place on the roster) and I think they are working hard on him.
Super fast though, I remember when he blocked the XP that was then scooped by Colvin against the 49ers I think...Colvin was running for the TD and Myrick after the block just ran him down to escort him to the end zone like he was taking a walk at the park. I really hope he can develop at least as a solid rotation player.

Still hoping we get a good CB in the draft, still hoping Hayden will prove us all wrong as it really stands out as a difficult deal to understand.

The worst deal is Sam Bradford for $20 million and it’s not close

It sucks that he signed with the tinhorns because he does significantly improve their secondary. I doubt he would have signed here to play nickel though, and I don’t see him as a huge upgrade over Gipson.
