You are oversimplifying this hypothetical situation.

1:  Not everyone in the military will follow orders to open fire on it's own citizens.  There will be defections and if that were to happen those folks will not be leaving empty handed.  
2:  Has there ever been a revolution without insiders turning away from the status quo?  

Now you are correct, if the battle were the entire military against either side it would be a coup like none other.  I just don't see it ever going that way though.

Oh and quit talking down to us lowly 'Merican posters.  You are inviting us to revolt.  ;-)
