Jags D vs Barkley week 1

(This post was last modified: 08-04-2018, 06:30 AM by JagFanatic24.)

Not only do we get OBJ, what do you guys feel about Barkley? Some guys are acting like he's gonna go for 200 every week. To be honest, I am more worried about Beckham more than Saqon.

Jacobs, Smith, and Jack will be a tough out for any RB

if the giants put together a win against us with Engram, OBJ, Barkley and Manning,... we get ousted by the pats again and the titans keep their trend going against us... we could very easily start the season off Oh and Trees. but nah, i am very optimistic about this year. key word:trees

How is NY's o-line? I don't know much about them, but if their o-line isn't strong I am not really worried about either.

NYG's offensive line has been the biggest weakness on their team over the past couple of seasons. They hired GM Dave Gettleman and Head Coach Pat Shurmur to improve this area among others so they should have a new look going forward. But the only starter on their offensive line from last year is Brett Jones (center). They have some new names along the offensive line such as Patrick Omameh (yeah, that Patrick Omameh). So they are shuffling a lot of things around on the offensive line in training camp.

Not worried.
This D held some good offenses to marginal scoring.
This pass rush should force Eli into a mistake or three and the one handed diva will be throwing hissy fits by halftime.

As long as we are healthy on defense in week one, especially along the D-Line such that we can exploit their RT, I think we are good enough to shut them down.

They do have an impressive array of skill players, perhaps better overall than the Steelers.  I would say the Steelers have the better QB and OL.

We held AB, Bell, and Ben to 9 points the first time and the only reason they were close in the playoffs were miraculous 4th down catches. Plus they have a better OL and Ben is more mobile/tougher than Eli.

If we managed that against them, then Odell, Eli, and rookie Saquon dont strike a lot of fear into me.

The return of Coughlin to NY, he wont leave without the W.

Jags fan from NY weighing in. My coworkers have been talking soooo much smack about how Odell will put up 200 yards on Ramsey and Barkley will shred our vaunted Defense

Their OLine is the biggest weakness. They made 2 acquisitions but its still not neccessarily a strength:

LT: Nate Solder - spend big money to get him in Offseason, he's a good LT but is a better pass blocker than run blocker. Yannick didn't seem to have trouble with him in the AFCCG.
LG: Will Hernandez - Rookie drafted in the high 2nd round, a guy a lot of Jags wanted. Reports out of camp are positive but he's still a rookie from a small conference. Malik Jackson is going to give him his "Welcome to the NFL Rook" moment, just watch!
C: Brett Jones - their C was their best player last year, which isn't saying much, with the addition of Solder he's now their 2nd best player on the line but not neccessarily "good".
RG: John Jerry - Despite signing for decent money, Omameh can't beat out the former Dolphin, John Jerry is nothing to write home about.
RT: Ereck Flowers[Image: whats-the-difference-between-ereck-flowe...844279.png]
- I'm just gonna leave that meme here... This man was roasted so much last year that I'm AMAZED he's starting this year. Calais might start the season with a 4 sack game again because Flowers is an absolute Turnstile.

Odell vs. Jalen, Jalen is friends with him but he doesnt want to give him bragging rights. It's Odell's first real action since the injury, We can just put a safety over the top if he's giving Jalen that much trouble, or try Bouye out on him. I don't anticipate OBJ being a problem, if he had 60 yards on the day .. I'd be surprised.

Barkley, if the team practices against Fournette I'm realllyyyy not worried about Saquon, especially behind the Giants Oline. It's not like the Cowboys where a talent like Elliot is complemented by the best blocking in the league. Telvin and Jack have more than enough speed to pursue and get him down. Jacobs taking on Fournette in the gap in the friday scrimmage is also an encouraging sign that we'll be able to bottle him up. If saquon does produce it will be through little dump offs in the flat, mark my words. He wont find room to run otherwise.

1) Draft Trevor Lawrence!
2) Play good physical Defense!
3) Keep 91% of the roster healthy!

I fully expect our defense to dominate that game.

I do too, except for Odell Beckham. If we go man to man and Jalen and Bouye lock him down then we will be good. But if we start giving a zone look, then Beckham can turn 5 yards into 80. That's what I'm concerned about.

All these guys on tv talking up Barkley is just crazy. They seriously make me feel like he will run wild against our stacked defense.

I hope Jack picks up a Barkley fumble after a nice thump...and takes it 60 yards to the house.

These aren't Coughlin's Giants...

I wouldn't worry about Barkley at all. OBJ has nothing on Antonio Brown. Winning on the road is never easy in the NFL but this team has shown the attitude to start strong in those games and our defense takes the crowd out of it pretty quick. This is probably going to be Eli's last year. Engram is probably my worry but not worried as in he'll torch us and beat us. I think we win time of possession and put up enough points to take Barkley away and make them one dimensional and then it's feasting time. They're pretty mediocre in all 3 phases. We have to show up with urgency and we'll get Coughlin some revenge.
No pain, no gain.

Hey guys, Giants fan here. Lived in Duval the past 15 years. Jags are by far now my #2 team I always root for, unless they play the Giants.

Anyway, I for one, wasnt thrilled about drafting a RB, any RB, at #2 especially with a 37 year old QB on the tail end of his career. That said, Barkley should be a beast. The Oline is still a major concern for me though, specifically the right side with Jones at C, Omameh at RG and Flowers at RT. Now, Flowers should be better at RT where most of the runs will go. He is a much better run blocker than pass blocker. He has power, just reacts way too slow to block a fast rush. Keeps his head down. The center spot worried me a lot too. Jones is "meh", and I thought they needed to upgrade this offseason. They did not. As for Omameh, well you guys are going to have to educate me on him some. He looked good so far in camp, but Im just not excited about him either.

Since this is all new to Giants fans, new exciting QB friendly offense and the new look 3-4 aggressive defense, no one really knows exactly what it will look like. I do expect Saquon to be a big part of the offense, watch out for the dump offs. That seems to be where he can separate himself from other RBs. If he has the slightest open space, he can take off. So if the Jags dial up the blitz, they need to have one of their speedy LBs covering Bark, and another shadowing our newer TE Evan Engram who IMO will be a matchup nightmare. All that and still have to worry about Odell. That said, it all is pointless if the OLine doesnt do their jobs and the JAgs D is no joke.

I still know the Jags would have beat NE if the refs werent Brady homers.

I will be rooting for the Jags after week 1. Good luck and stay healthy!

How's it going, Welcome to the board! I'm a lifelong Jags fan and I've been here in NY my whole life. Allow me to weigh in if i can:

1) yea didn't understand the Barkley pick (not that he's not good) considering Eli is 37 and none of his protege's have really "wowed"
2) agree about the Giants Center, he was their best lineman last year but that's a very relative term and no one would objectively consider him "good".
3) Omameh, correct me if I'm wrong but I heard John Jerry was taking the reps at RG? unless they've shuffled the depth chart again. Anyways, in regards to Omameh, he played LG for us but idt the transition to RG is too much for him. He's a very smart player. he understands the game but he has glaring physical limitations that explain why he's been a journeyman thus far in his career. He can have flashes of brilliance and then a stretch of maddening play that makes you want to rip your hair out. If you have good players next to him you can kind of hide him per se, but against the top half of the leagues 3 technique DT's he's going to get exposed BADLY. He seems like a good guy and is easy to root for, but he's at best a replacement level player, he'll play pretty well in camp but against other teams that luster quickly wears off.
4) why the switch to the 3-4 Defense? Olivier Vernon is a good rush linebacker in that scheme and Damon Harrison is a prototypical NT, but I just dont see the rest of their front 7 really being a fit yk.
5) Saquon has looked good... against the Giants LB's... don't get me wrong I think he's a phenomenal talent, but I just don't see the blocking in front of him that Zeke, Gurley & Fournette had coming into the league. As far as week 1, I think Telvin Smith & Myles Jack may be the fastest pair of linebackers in the league and practice against Fournette, I don't think they'll have a problem if they can avoid getting blocked at the 2nd level. If Barkley is going to do damage it'll be dumpoffs in the flat as the man has rare receiving skills for a back his size. Good dude, hope he works out for you guys from week 2 on!
6) how is Ereck Flowers starting?? This man is a turnstile, I get he's a better run blocker than he's given credit for, but he's absolutely whipped by any linemen with quickness or a good first step in the pass or run game.
7) Solder has been struggling in camp. Did he get paid and is resting on his laurels after he got rings with the Pats? Is he having trouble learning the scheme? trouble communicating with his new linemates?
8) Engram... Isn't this man a drop machine? It also seems like he's not a willing blocker. Had him in fantasy last year and he was solid, but how much of that was having every receiver hurt and virtually no one else to throw to so he was forcefed targets?

Sorry if I'm sounding like a debbie downer, but everyone up here has been drinking the Big Blue Koolaid and is really hyped about the season but I think they're looking past a lot of flaws and question marks that'll need to be answered come preseason. As a fellow NY'er I'm rooting for you guys once the final whistle blows on week 1. Best of luck!

To use Marrone's mantra we won't be starting the first quarter 0-3. We almost beat the GOAT in Foxborough we're going to be juiced for that game. The Giants game kind of feels like a trap. We SHOULD win that game but it's not really a familiar opponent and we're in their house. Unless Barkley runs all over us we will win that game end of story. The Titans are probably our biggest competition in the division. They swept us last year but we have to be better against the run and the offense has to keep the defense fresh and put up points. We could easily be 0-3 or 3-0. That's the nature of the NFL. Depends on how much urgency and consistency we bring on game day. Unless you're a bottom feeding team like we were for several years up until last year.
No pain, no gain.

Don't worry about Omameh. He's solid. Plug him in where you need him, and he'll do his job.

To me, this guy is really informative on breaking film down. I’ve been watching him for a little over a year now and while he is a Texans fan, I feel he stays pretty neutral. I believe he said he used to work for the NFL network in one of his videos and did this for a living. Anyway, here is his breakdown of how the Giants can take advantage of the Jags D. I though some of it was interesting. I hope y’all enjoy.

That meme is frickin awesome...
Had no idea Omameh wasn't cracking their starting lineup. (Also heard Carolina is having a hard time filling Norwells spot)

OL Matters more than most positions, especially with a less than mobile aging QB and weapons meant for a downfield attack.

I'm not worried about Barkley. When we're up by 20 in the 2nd half, he won't be running much.

Eli is no Brady.
Brady was so quick to get rid of the ball... who needs to block well for that long lol
Solder on the back end too...

Plus, I often consider New England guys as system guys. They dwell as a team in their system, individually they aren't usually that great. Sans the obvious choices of Gronk, a declining Brady, etc there are a few truly desirable personnel on the roster, but their system prevails. Watch Butler flame out in titanville (hopefully) Wink
Success is a journey, not a destination.  Go all out Mighty Jaguars.
