Unfortunately, not the first time nor will it be the last. It is quite difficult to schedule routine care let alone emergency care. Some states have done well by providing counseling and urgent care centers in strip malls as a means of providing quicker care while not having to jump through the multitude of hoops required at a VA hospital. In my experience, the mental health segment at the VA is overextended and limited in treatement.
