Thursday should provide some additional time to evaluate both players.  I do think Taven will look better with the starting defensive players. I am a firm believer in starting the best player, so at this point, I would not pencil in either as the starter.

My earlier analysis was on the inside positions, but nothing really changes viewing Bryan as the big end.

Campbell easily starts over Bryan.  D Jones also starts over him.

In an obvious pas rush situation, Campbell goes inside, and Ngakoue, Allen, and McCray all play before Bryan outside, and based on this year, Smoot would even be better.

At this stage, about the one thing that distinguishes Bryan from Alualu is power.

We need Ngakoue and Allen on the outside as much as possible. Every mobile QB killed us bootlegging towards Campbell's side because he just doesn't have to speed the contain them.

Power is certainly one aspect of his game, but I think your analysis of Bryan is a little harsh at this point playing with the backups. Marrone seems very pleased with him so far in camp and I am not ready to make a judgment on his performance until I see him this week. One thing for sure as you pointed out he has a lot of competition D Jones and Smoot elevating thier games this year and this may be a make or break year for him.

No, because if you paid attention he has been playing much better than Smoot. Jones isn't here to uproot Bryan at 3T, although, he could keep him out of that 3rd down big end role.

He can play 3 tech too which gives them a good few options there
