Zach Zenner?

#1

The Lions just released Zach Zenner. If the Jaguars are looking for more depth at running back, they could do much worse than this guy. He is also very good on special teams. No, he won't take them to the Super Bowl, but he'd be a reliable back-up.

Has he been a good 3rd down back for them? I have seen him here and there. But after Fournette and Armstead they could use all the quality depth they can get.

Not sure about how he was used in Detroit. He had a prolific college career at SDSU and was a more than capable receiver out of the backfield. He has flashed at times for the Lions, but lacks the elite athletic qualities to be a regular starter.

If by "elite athletic qualities"  you mean great combine and pro day numbers as measured by sparq,  he actually has great, or pretty great numbers there.

Top 20% sparq.

Zach Zenner    RB36    RB    South Dakota State    24    5114    223    132.1    0.9    80.7    Zenner    5114    223    32.00    9.63    76.625    4.60    2.71    1.64    4.14    6.88    25    41    10.08

The 40 time and the 10 split are not great.

The 3 cone + shuttle (quickness) are great.  The bench + jumps (explosiveness) are great.

Quick and explosive but not fast.

I was surprised the Lions released Zach Zenner. With injuries at some other positions and the high upside potential that 6th Round pick Ty Johnson ( Maryland ) displayed this summer, Zenner probably would have been the 4th string RB. Even fqctoring all of this in, the decision to release Zenner could easily turn out to be a mistake. With the greater emphasis the Lions are putting on rushing, plenty of depth at RB is important.

Zach Zenner had a 5.1 yards per carry in the first 3 pre-season games combined. This despite not having a breakaway run. Zenner had a 4.8 rushing average per carry in 2018.
Zenner is consistent and dependable. He has a great work ethic and is studying to be a doctor. He's not flashy. North-South runner. Reliable receiver. Pretty good at picking up blitzes and on Special Teams. Some team easily could get a bargain.
