On the offensive side of the ball, the problem is that he left the cupboard bare at two really important places, OL and QB.  The defense I believe is a product of poor coaching.  He wanted Jim Leavitt from the beginning but couldn't get him away from Oregon.  He has him now as an analyst who will likely take over as DC the following year when he's allowed to, but I'm not sure Willie will make it that far.

Edit, the rash of injuries on the OL last year didn't help either, they were so thin they were moving defensive tackles over to play offensive guard.

Again, with all of the 4 star OL they recruited (consistent with other top 5 teams), it's hard for me to say they got the recruiting wrong.  I blame player development, even dating back to the Jimbo era.  Also, can't overlook the biggest problem this year has been the defense, which has been pinpointed to terrible coaching.

Back to the offensive side of the ball, I'd give Hornibrook (QB) a shot this point.  Blackman has decent stats but seems to be very inconsistent in the 2nd half; most recently missing a wide open WR on a 25 yard pass that  would have resulted in a TD vs Virginia.
