Panthers & Cam Newton
|
Not that it's really that much of a secret but it's starting to gain more traction now as the 2019 regular season comes closer to an end and with Ron Rivera's recent firing.
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001...cam-newton Not sure what the value will be on him though. He's been dealing with a lot of shoulder and foot injuries since last year and now with surgery involved he would be fortunate to be ready by March at the age of 31 by the time the regular season starts in 2020. Value wise he's probably ranging anywhere between RD2 - RD4. No way can I see a team shelling out a 1RD selection for him though. The landing spot is what's the most interesting subject. The Dolphins have the draft picks to wheel and deal for him if they decide Tagovailoa is too risky. I can't see the Bengals opting to trade for him if they're holding onto the number one selection for Joe Burrow. Maybe the Broncos and Chargers will be in play depending on what they do with Flacco and Rivers respectively. Chicago & Tampa Bay would be interesting locations as well. ![]() "What do I know of cultured ways, the gilt, the craft and the lie? I, who was born in a naked land and bred in the open sky. I call the Panther's bluff. They won't want to pay him 19 million to be a back up. I wait and see if they cut him.
My question is why did Cam wait so long to have surgery? He should have had it done as soon as he was put on IR so he would have a longer recovery period before gearing up for next season.
I see Tepper wanting to start fresh with a new QB. If he is willing to fire Rivera who doesn't see eye-to-eye with his vision I can see him wanting to trade a player/QB who can't stay healthy.
New Owner. New coach. New QB is likely.
Honestly with his age and injury history, I don't see them getting better than a 3rd. However, if they wait until post draft and a team gets an injury at the position, they could deal him in a Sam Bradford style deal and get more from a desperate team. 19 mil isn't terribly expensive... but his play was on the decline and the injuries and Carolina's willingness to move on would all leave me playing hard ball as a GM. I think the Bears stick with Mitch Trubisky. If the bolts move on from Rivers I could that a potential landing spot. Maybe the tacks feel he'd be an upgrade to Tannehill (I don't personally) To be real though... options are slim, imo, for the plus 30 not elite QB. The teams with a need at QB can address it in the draft with Burrow, Tua, Herbert early... but if a team goes the route of Fromm or Love (who probably need to sit a bit) they could use Cam as their stop-gap. Luckily for us, we're so tied up in Foles' contract and the dim hope that Minshew can be the man and the cap hell, we won't be bothering.
I think Tampa Bay could be a good call. I think Winston had a shot this year but way too many picks again, Cam is a better version but hes not played many games the last few years. Arians got good results from Carson Palmer.
I cant see the Panthers keeping him as a backup, how desperate are they to get rid of him? Anything worse than a 3rd round is cheap. We show less advertisements to registered users. Accounts are free; join today!
I don't want him. He's broken down and he sucks when he's pressured. The Cam of today is a shell of what he was in 2015. He's also never been a very accurate passer. He's less than 60% for his NFL career. In fact, he's only had 2 years where he was above 60%. That is not good at all.
