Final Mock Draft / Prediction

#1

This is my last stab at the mock draft for this year. This is how I honestly HOPE and THINK the draft MAY play out personally. Please feel free to add your own breakdowns. I didn't add any trades into this simulator. But I wouldn't be surprised if they traded and swapped some picks around with Ngakoue involved. Appreciate it!

RD1 / P9: Jeffrey Okudah - CB - OSU
RD1 / P20: Josh Jones - LT - HOU
RD2 / P42: Grant Delpit - S - LSU
RD3 / P73: Malik Harrison - LB - OSU
RD4 / P116: Antonio Gandy-Golden - WR - LIB
RD4 / P137: Adam Trautman - TE - DAY
RD4 / P140: Khalil Davis - DT - NEB
RD5 / P166: Anthony McFarland Jr. - RB - MAR
RD5 / P171: Hakeem Adeniji - LT - KAN
RD6/ P190: Shaquille Quarterman - LB - MIA
RD6 / P207: Carter Coughlin - DE - MIN
RD7 / P224: A.J Green - CB - OSU

I feel like we really need to come away from this draft with not just starters but solid to quality depth. I think you gain two starters in a sense by taking Josh Jones to push Cam Robinson, A.J Cann & Jawaan Taylor into a different role. I think Okudah and Delpit are instant starters in your secondary. Harrison at LB gives you some quality depth and the potential to move on from Schobert sooner rather than later if he doesn't show up early.

Gandy-Golden and Trautman add some good depth to the skill positions on offense with the potential to develop into big role players early or more down the road. Khalil Davis is a solid pass rushing type DT. Good value there in RD4. I like McFarland's skill set at RB. Adeniji out of Kansas can swing between LT and RT. Could probably be kicked inside. Again, solid depth added there. I like Quarterman, Coughlin & Green there in RD6 - RD7 to again, just add some quality depth and help on ST's.

I'd be over the moon. I'd prefer to take Josh Jones in Rd. 2 but it's becoming more and more apparent he won't last to the 2nd round.

I would be thrilled with Okudah, and all things considered, Jones would be a decent get at 20.

Though he seemed to have a down year at LSU, Depit fits a need, is good value at that spot, and I think he could be a very good pro.

If I had to knock this draft, I'd say given the team's emphasis on wanting playmakers and the depth of the WR class, I don't think this draft takes enough advantage of the WR depth.  I would expect two WRs drafted by the team this year.

But a strong effort here.

As strong as Caldrac's effort was, I like this class better.

It takes advantage of the WR depth, getting good value with Jeudy at 9 then Gandy-Golden in the 4th and closing with Proche late.

Addresses CB with Henderson, though based on the buzz, I don't think he falls to 20.  But if he is still there, it's good value.  As with Caldrac, I have no complaint at all with Delpit at 42, especially without knowing who else is on the board.  But just taking Delpit the player into consideration, he fits nicely there.

I think you did an admirable job addressing the interior Def line with Agim and Jones, and leave us minimally with improved OL depth with Charles and Lewis (in fact I think Lewis supplants Cann as a starter.

In fact, I have no problems with this haul whatsoever.

Great job!

Figuring that if I am critiquing others' efforts, I should do one myself,  I did a mock on profootballnetwork.com with their draft simulator.

I like theirs because you can make free trades and it's easy to use.

I traded down twice:  from 9 down to 11, picking up #79, enabling the Jets to get their T.  When all three of the top WRs, Kinlaw and Henderson were all still on the board, I was tempted to move down again, but I didn't want to get too cute.

I then traded down from 20 to 24, enabling the Saints to get their replacement for Brees in Jordan Love, in exchange for #88, so I wound up with 3 3rd round picks and 14 picks overall.

Not totally happy with my efforts.  I find using this simulator, there is no way for me to remain consistent with the board and get both Solomon Kindley and Leki Fotu in the 4th.  The gap from 116-137 is too great.  I could get one but not the other.  Perhaps I should have traded again from 11.

11.  Jerry Jeudy, WR, Alabama
24.  Kristian Fulton, CB, LSU
42.  Josh Jones, T, Houston-Was tempted to take Hamler or Aiyuk here.  Aiyuk was criminally underrated by this board (#63 overall).  Gambled he might be there for me at 73.
73.  J.K. Dobbins, RB, Ohio State-none of the guys I really wanted were there.  Aiyuk went last pick in round 2.  Instead of trading back, just took BAP per that board.
79.  Albert Okwuegbunam, TE, Missouri-went back and forth between him and Troutman here.  Not entirely sold on him, but took him on the hopes he could hit the deep seams and create mismatches.
88.  Chase Claypool, WR, Notre Dame
116. Solomon Kindley, G, Georgia-it was either him or Fotu.
137.  Brandon Jones, S, Texas
140.  Antonio Gandy Golden, WR, Liberty
157.  Ben Bredesen, G, Michigan
165. Nick Harris, C, Washington-Washington is a schol that has produced some good Cs over the years.  The team has shown interest in him, we have the picks, and at this point he was worth the investment.
189. Khalil Davis, DT Nebraska-finally got around to DT.  Not happy with that.
206.  Damien Lewis, G, LSU-No secret he is a fave of mine.  Ranked 211 on the board.
223. Shaquille Quarterman, ILB, Miami.

My initial reaction to this is I got carried away on offense.  But I wanted to ensure we gave Minshew or any future signal caller ample weapons and to take advantage of the WR depth in this class.  It would not shock me to see the team go after two or three WRs in this draft and more in UDFA.  I also wanted to stock up on offensive linemen, and I think Jones was good value at 42.  If I hit on the OL picks, we should have insane depth and flexibility inside.

Anyway, I'll shut up for now.

Rip away.

Like bullseye I used the draft to get Minshew/offense as much ammo as possible. Either Minshew shines or we have a ready made O for Lawerence/Fields next year.

WR:
Jeudy I saw as the last possible "elite/all pro potential" since Wirfs/Okudah/Simmons/Brown were all gone. Gandy-Golden gives us the bigger RZ WR and Proche in the 7th was to lock him up before UDFA because I doubt we get many WR to sign if the draft falls this way.

RB:
Akers is my RB crush this year and he was able to produce behind a bad OL...I think he gives insurance for Fournette not resigning.

OL:
Like Bullseye I think Lewis supplants Cann and will likely be drafted earlier than most think (late 3rd/4th round).

I don't like a WR that will end up being a slot receiver at 9.

What about Jeudy makes you think he is only a slot?

Like genuinely curious...

I am thinking the same but imo there's no way Henderson makes it to 20. I'd say trade to 13 for Henderson, would 2 4th's be enough? If they are I'd keep Bryant in the 4th.

I agree with you on trading up to get Henderson. This draft would get them a #1 receiver, #1 cornerback, starting safety, a replacement for Fournette and a receiving tight end. The other picks would provide solid depth at other positions.

Disclaimer: This is not what I want, but what I think will happen and what I have heard from scouts within the org(It's DC so take that with a grain of salt)

1.9 Simmons Would be at Saftey or if he is gone then it is Brown
1.20 Jaylon Johnson(also heard we could slide back in the later 20s).....would be a very bad pick fwiw
2.42 Tee Higgins....would be an ok pick, would prefer some other guys who will probably be here
2.?? Think this is where we trade up from 3 and throw in one of our later picks to get Cam Akers or CEH
4th/5th Rounders I have heard LB/IOL/Edge as the main guys who would be targeted with these picks
Think DT will come late in the 6th or 7th unless Kinlaw slides in round 2

Yeah Simmons if he's there has been around recently it seems, which makes sense. Johnson I wouldn't take round 1 either

Hypothetically if they both are there, they like Simmons more. Obviously i don't imagine both of them are there. An absolute ton of smoke in mainstream about Brown to Detroit and a ton of smoke in the scouting channels. I still think he goes to Carolina

Trades make everything messy obviously, but right now my best guess is
Burrow
Young
Okudah
Wirfs
Herbert
Thomas
Brown
Wills
Simmons

Someone will trade up for Herbert or Tua after the other one is taken. If Tua slips to the teens watch out for the Saints. If Herbert slips watch out for the Colts.
