Like.... I see 14 year olds nowadays that could pass for 18. Something in the water. Antibiotics in the chicken... I dunno.

Point is... it isn't the point what they could pass for on looks.
A 27 year old grown man should know better.  If you need to check an ID, they are too young for you.

He nasty....
That’s where I am too. I’m 29, one if my buddies who never settled down is with a 21 y/o and all our boys give him [BLEEP] about her being young.

It isn’t because of her appearance or actual age, but more of her mannerisms and personality traits that can’t quite be put any way than “she’s young”. Even though there is only an 8 year difference, you notice a difference. She isn’t stupid and there isn’t one thing that points to this, but it’s noticeably there. This isn’t the first time stuff like this happened. Most people feel the same. If you don’t and you are single, you should probably start asking for ids lmbo.

That’s why I find myself on the “he should have known” side.

That’s just me though.

About 10 years ago. When I was 21, going on 22. I was seeing this girl who was 18 going on 19. I only went out with her three times. The deal breaker? She said she was in school, and I assumed college, but she was referring to high school and for whatever reason, in my mind, I interpreted that as "She's too young for you bro. She hasn't even started working yet full time and you're starting your work and life now at full time".

That's just with a 2 - 3 year age difference. And I was literally in that same spot a whopping 2, 3 years ago. Had she been in college my mind probably wouldn't have thought too much about it. But I felt like Seth Rogen's character in Pineapple Express where he was dating and competing with a high school girl. It was creepy to me.

Ultimately it worked out for the best. But looking back on it I was a dick for that mindset.

Knuckleheads abound. People do stupid [BLEEP] all the time. Some its about money, or girlfriend/boyfriend/spouse, or family. I think #22 had some demons that could hae benefited from professional counseling or a good pyschiatrist.
As I said in another thread, "you have to walk a mile in another man's shoes..."

If his head was on straight he could have helped this team. He'll get probation and will never play again in the NFL.

Exactly, If you're 27 you shouldn't be hanging out at high school pep rally's looking for a girlfriend.   Dang, just go back to FSU with your $18.5 million in career earnings and take your pick of the litter.   Get the heck away from Sandalwood High School.

News either way. And still highly illegal and wrong. But there a difference

I agree, we need some context. If they're 17 and they lied, or had fake ID, one thing. If he is legit touching kids and seeking kids, completely different and he deserves the worst done to him, prison is too lax of a punishment.

I am a due process kinda guy, but this doesn't look good at all for Smith regardless. FL is stupid strict when it comes to statutory rape. Even if they are 16/17, doesn't matter if she lied, even if she has a fake ID that says shes 18, 21, or older... You are going to prison, consensual or not, and she walks free. #equality!! I've heard rumblings there were also drug charges??

Crazy crazy stuff.

Some people don't seen to grasp that point.

Dude he’s not a pedophile. It’s not like his computer has child porn on it. He got caught up with a 17 year old who lied about her age. Huge difference

You know what evidence they have?  As of right now, all that's been reported is that JSO does have evidence of sexual encounters between the two, including him coming up with a cover story if anyone asks about their relationship.  The girl didn't lie about her age.  He knew she was underage when he pursued her.  If you were a father with a daughter around the same age, and this happened to her, I'm thinking your tune would be completely different.

The evidence (as reported) isn't good for him and my thinking is that his only hope is to plea down to a lesser charge.  Either way I think he's going to serve some time.

Bingo.  They've got a ton of evidence that they've collected since November.  They've got corroborating witnesses.  They've got evidence from his vehicle.  This isn't a circumstantial case.  His only option is to plea this down if the reports about the evidence are accurate.

That would be true for you and me - but we all know that there are different rules for the wealthy. He can "settle with her" (pay her off with life altering money) and all of a sudden, there's an uncooperative witness who isn't willing to testify, making a trial much more difficult for the prosecution. Of course if the girl has cooperated to this point, hopefully she sees it through.
If he has been charged with a crime here (which he has), there's no settling out of court.  The girl has already provided her account, and she has corroboration from multiple people she spoke with after the incident.  There's no need for her not to cooperate at this point.  He can certainly plea deal this if his legal team thinks that's the best approach.  He's not writing a check and getting out of this.  That's a civil matter, and he may very well be dragged into civil court by the girl at some point, and then he'll need to break out the checkbook.

If he did this - and all indications and reports seem to indicate that he not only did it, but he pursued her, he knew her age at the time and he paid her to lie about it if anyone asked - then I hope he is successfully prosecuted to the full extent of the law.  I have daughters and I know how I would feel if this happened to one of them.  I don't know this girl at all and I'm disturbed and disgusted by Telvin's actions.  I do have to disagree with you though - while I'm aware that he can't settle the legal issue and charges against him out of court (other than reaching a plea deal that possibly avoids the girl having to testify), he certainly can reach a monetary settlement with the girl and her family whereby she doesn't testify when this goes to trial.  That would make the legal case against him difficult to prove and get a conviction - though not impossible.  They'd still have the witness' testimony of her telling him she's 17, they'd still have the DNA from his vehicle matching her - it would just get problematic if there's no plea deal and she doesn't testify since anything she said to the police up to this point simply can't be used in a trial.

Wouldn't that be just another charge? Witness tampering, or something? One can't pay off witnesses in a criminal trial any more than one can threaten them. A few of you have conflated civil and criminal trials. There will be no payoff, period.

I understand. And I’m not saying I don’t like someone who gives off that vibe, I’m just saying it is something that is noticeable and I find myself aware of that when I meet them. I guess I should have said that too. When someone gives my buddy [BLEEP] about his girls age, it’s less of a insult and more of joking barb aimed more at him than her.

Honestly if he ever got in a relationship we thought was more serious than just a monthly fling that we would probably never see again, most of that [BLEEP] would go away.

I think the only way that could happen is if she was the one pushing the charges. If she was the states witness I would assume she cannot be payed off.

I'm not conflating anything, I'm fully aware of the difference between criminal and civil cases.  While not necessarily common, there are "Non-Cooperation Provisions" that can be written into a civil settlement.  Each state has different laws/statutes that govern civil settlements and whether or not these provisions are legal and/or ethical since they basically buy a witnesses silence.  But they do exist.  In this situation, as I explained above, a monetary (civil) settlement can be reached with someone that includes a "Non-Cooperation Provision".  If the girl doesn't cooperate with the prosecution, it'll be difficult (not impossible) to convict him, leading to a higher probability of a plea deal.  I'm not saying this is going to happen, I'm not saying it should happen - I'm on record as stating that Telvin should face the full extent of whatever he can be charged with - especially if the facts that we've heard and read are accurate and he knew her age and paid her in an attempt to get her to lie about what he had done to her.

Seems in Florida, if Telvin tries to buy this girl's silence, he then would be charged with something from this statute.

Like I said before, for them to waited this long to bring the charges against him and still came out with that much force, it doesn’t look good. I understand why they do this but it still is a little weird to me that they let him live free for this long and don’t just say “come turn your self in” rather than mobilize swat team to come into queens harbor to make him do a perp walk.

Maybe there is a lot we don’t know, but it just seems like over kill.

It just goes to show, some guys grow up in areas that never changes them. The NFL and all the money and fame doesn’t change some people.

Now he’s just another dude. I honestly believe he could have been in the pride and maybe a hall of fame career.

He still leads the team in career returned INT returned for TDs. And he will probably hold that spot for a long time. To do it as a LB is pretty crazy.

He was my all time favorite LB. He was a pure football player and gave 110% on every play. This really sucks.
