I agree, we need some context. If they're 17 and they lied, or had fake ID, one thing. If he is legit touching kids and seeking kids, completely different and he deserves the worst done to him, prison is too lax of a punishment.

 I am a due process kinda guy, but this doesn't look good at all for Smith regardless. FL is stupid strict when it comes to statutory rape. Even if they are 16/17, doesn't matter if she lied, even if she has a fake ID that says shes 18, 21, or older... You are going to prison, consensual or not, and she walks free. #equality!! I've heard rumblings there were also drug charges?? 

Crazy crazy stuff.

Some people don't seen to grasp that point.

You know what evidence they have?  As of right now, all that's been reported is that JSO does have evidence of sexual encounters between the two, including him coming up with a cover story if anyone asks about their relationship.  The girl didn't lie about her age.  He knew she was underage when he pursued her.  If you were a father with a daughter around the same age, and this happened to her, I'm thinking your tune would be completely different.

Bingo.  They've got a ton of evidence that they've collected since November.  They've got corroborating witnesses.  They've got evidence from his vehicle.  This isn't a circumstantial case.  His only option is to plea this down if the reports about the evidence are accurate.

That would be true for you and me - but we all know that there are different rules for the wealthy. He can "settle with her" (pay her off with life altering money) and all of a sudden, there's an uncooperative witness who isn't willing to testify, making a trial much more difficult for the prosecution. Of course if the girl has cooperated to this point, hopefully she sees it through.

If he has been charged with a crime here (which he has), there's no settling out of court.  The girl has already provided her account, and she has corroboration from multiple people she spoke with after the incident.  There's no need for her not to cooperate at this point.  He can certainly plea deal this if his legal team thinks that's the best approach.  He's not writing a check and getting out of this.  That's a civil matter, and he may very well be dragged into civil court by the girl at some point, and then he'll need to break out the checkbook.
