53 Prediction

(This post was last modified: 07-23-2020, 03:37 PM by ATLjag.)

With the removal of the preseason games and camp roster reduction to 80, I thought I'd take a swing at the end of the preseason 53 man roster.  I have assumed the same number for each position group as made it to last year's final cut to 53.  Also, I am assuming Ngakoue signs the tag right before the first game and is on the initial roster (whether he is on or off the roster by the later trade deadline is not relevant for this initial roster projection).

Offense: (24)
QB (2)- Minshew, Glennon
RB (3)- Fournette, Armstead, Thompson
WR (6)- Chark, Conley, Shenault, Westbrook, Cole, Johnson
TE (4)- Eifert, Oliver, O'Shaughnessy, Davis
OL (9)- Taylor, Cann, Linder, Norwell, Robinson, Bartch, Shatley, Richardson, Wallace-Simms

Defense: (26)
DE (5)- Allen, Ngakoue, Smoot, McCray, Lynch
DT (5)- Gunter, Woods, Bryan, Hamilton, Jones
LB (6)- Jack, Schobert, Chaisson, Williams, Quarterman, Marsh
CB (5)- Henderson, Herndon, Hayden, Melvin, Scott
S (5)- Harrison, Wilson, Wingard, Thomas, Reed

Specialists: (3)
P (1)- Cooke
K (1)- Lambo
LS (1)- Orzech

Practice Squad: (12)

Note: Although I kept the same number at each position group from last year's final cut for the exercise above, I believe they are going to keep Claybrooks on the roster as primarily a return specialist and likely keep 4 safeties as a result.  Also, I would like to see them keep 4 RBs, and retain Ozigbo.  The practice squad was planned to increase to 12 this season and referenced above; however, some insiders are speculating that it may rise to 16 due to the pandemic.  If Ngakoue is not on the opening roster due to unsigned tag or trade, I think they add Jacobs back to the 53.

Good read. If everything goes ok, we are getting near the promise land (the start of the season)
I'm super excited to see this team play. I know we are supposed to get our #$% kicked, but I'm ready to watch every game.

I don’t think Glennon makes the team.

I think Glennon and Dobbs will be a good camp battle.  I gave Glennon the edge simply that he has more game experience.

Aren't they making rosters larger this year?

It's sad that UDFA's wont get much of a chance this season without a real full camp and preseason games.

Which is why I think they will allow larger rosters this year.

Per CBS Sports... agreed changes thus far as related to rosters.

Rosters
  • Teams can designate an additional player to return from injured reserve each year (three instead of two)

  • Two practice-squad players each week can be elevated to the team's active roster, and a team doesn't have to replace the player on the practice squad

  • Active game-day rosters increased from 46 to 48 players

  • Practice squads expanded from 10 to 12 players in 2020-2021, then to 14 players starting in 2022 (including between two and four players with unlimited accrued seasons per team)

(Core roster remains at 53 today)

I believe Claybrooks will make the team as a returner and reserve corner and Robinson will make the squad as a back-up running back. Robinson's chances have been hurt, however, due to not having pre-season games as have all the undrafted guys. Wingard and Wallace-Sims will not make the 53 man roster.

Agreed on Wingard, if they only keep 4 safeties, he'd be a goner.  I kept Wallace-Simms on the roster as I needed a 9th OL, as that is what they kept last season's final cut to 53.  Some radio guys speculated this week the 9th OL would be McDermott.  I just think Wallace-Simms has more upside, but does need development. I actually think the 9th OL spot will likely come from another team's cuts.

I would like to see us pick up Alex Smith.

On offense, I think Ozigbo makes the final roster. I predict Cole gets traded for peanuts in a few weeks. Wallace-Simms and McDermott both will be cut. I foresee a veteran guard added. Astronaut wannabe will get cut. He has little upside. Glennon will play the non-threatening big brother Henne role.

On defense, I'd add Jacobs. He's a valuable special teamer/reserve linebacker. I see no problem keeping seven "linebackers." They're needed for special teams, and they blend together with DEs in Wash's multiple-look scheme. Lynch is a goner. He's just a guy. Wingard will get replaced by a veteran safety cut from another team.

I hope Jacobs makes the team and continues to improve. I’m rooting for the kid.
