Election nerds like me are used to watching vote totals go up through the night, and watch the number of precincts reporting.  Absentee and mail in ballots usually aren't discussed.  This election, the reporters are going to have to report the same numbers, but also report "mail in ballots left to count" so that everyone has an idea if the counting is close to over or not.
If everyone can see that the winner's lead is greater than the number of ballots that are left to count, they will understand that the counting is not over.

But wait!  In 2008 prominent democrats wanted to discount absentee ballots in Florida because they did not arrive on time, even though the date stamp indicated they were submitted on time.  How do you propose this should be handled in 2020 with a whole lot less security involved in ballot integrity?

As far as riots in Jacksonville, one night and it was quelled.
