Here is a question about udfa

#1

Is an undrafted free agent rookie under any obligation to play for the team he is on after the first year?  Is James Robinson a free agent next season?

Usually they sign a minimal deal. 2-3 years.

My first car was a 1979 Camaro Rally Sport. It cost me $1700 and that was back in 1988. LOL.

Perhaps I'm looking at it wrong, but to me it appears that he received a $25,000.00 signing bonus and will earn a salary of $610,000.00 this year.

From the link Posted by flgatorsandjags:
Quote:James Robinson signed a 3 year, $2,290,000 contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including a $25,000 signing bonus, $25,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $763,333. In 2020, Robinson will earn a base salary of $610,000 and a signing bonus of $5,000, while carrying a cap hit of $611,666 and a dead cap value of $25,000.

That's not bad money for a 22 year old.

I was looking at the 1,666 per year as signing bonus. Not sure how they broke that down/what it is. Either way, he's already proved he's worth every dollar compared to what we spent on Fournette/Gerhart the past few years.

I'm not sure exactly how they move the money around either, but it seems to me that he receives about $35,882.00 per week ($610,000.00 base salary/17 week season).  It is my understanding that he should receive his $25,000.00 signing bonus within a year so I'm not entirely sure how that works out.  According to the text, he gets $5000.00 of that bonus this season.

However you look at it, he's made more in 2 weeks than a lot of people earn in a year.

I agree with you that he's worth every dollar that he's earned/will earn.

The way it's designated on the cap differs from the way he receives it.

I think he'll get the bonuses up front. The 610,000 divided by each week.

What if he was a bust. Are years 2 and 3 guaranteed --- i assume those years are based on a condition that he makes the 53 player roster. does anybody know?

It doesn't make sense to me (it's illogical).  610,000 / 17 weeks = 35882.35 per week.  That is his base salary which I believe doesn't include any bonus money.

Math beyond a 1, 0 or F confuses me.

I assume that he's already made his guaranteed money ($25,000.00) after week one based on his weekly salary.  How his signing bonus ($25,000.00) is paid out is a mystery to me.  From reading the text of the link provided I assume that he has been paid or will be paid $5000.00 of that in this year.

Just my thinking, and I could be wrong about this.  If he got cut tomorrow I would think that he would still be owed the remainder of his signing bonus ($20,000.00) and nothing more.

What I think happened is he got paid $25,000 to sign in April as an guarantee even if he gets cut, but not technically a signing bonus (wording is wrong in link). Then he gets $5,000 additional which is split across 3 years. So he basically got $30,000 upfront. The signing bonus has to be split across the years in the contract. The dead cap hit is $25,000 for the guarantee this year. So he gets the yearly salary plus $5,000.

His signing bonus of 25,000 is incorrect and was likely a mistype with the 25,000 guaranteed.  He only got a 5000 signing bonus.  According to Spotrac, is appears he got 20,000 guaranteed at signing, plus the 5,000 signing bonus.  No idea what the guarantees are in his contract, but we've already paid him 5000 plus whatever guarantees he's hit so far, so we'd owe him whatever of that 20000 we haven't paid if he were cut tomorrow.

I think his contract is more than Minshews.

Minshew makes Around 500k a year I think.

Odd UFA would make more than a draft pick.

"Gardner Minshew signed a 4 year, $2,710,884 contract with the Jacksonville Jaguars, including a $190,884 signing bonus, $190,884 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $677,721." - Sportrac

He got a longer deal, more upfront, more annually, and more guaranteed. So...nope. He'll also probably get a MUCH bigger second contract next season.
