There was a time when that was true, at least for the vast majority of immigrants, who were only seeking to make a better life for themselves.  I believe many now simply expect our government to give them a better life.

I'm 100% in favor of one entrance to the border, and one exit.. Bring in the Mexicans who want to chase the American Dream and kick out these American hating, do nothing liberal democrats.. But I doubt Mexico would want them.

Unfortunately all welfare programs promote poverty. No matter if you were born here or not. They are used to get you to rely on the government and to stay below the poverty line. Because of you strive for a better life, then you have to give up living off the government.
