NFL ratings are down from comparable weeks and time slots from last year. Interesting. 

 

I expect that trend to continue tonight with the dud of a game they have on.

  That's a good question,  considering the size of the ratings decrease.  

 

  One factor probably is so many technological options for people these days.   Yet,  that was also the case last season.   Hence,  it probably is something else that's playing a major role in the ratings decline.    Maybe the flag ' controversy'  is playing a major role?

 

 Regardless,  the NFL and NFLPA should keep the ratings decline at this point in time in mind when they are negotiating the next CBA.

I've never been really big on watching teams I don't root for but:


I refuse to give money to DirecTV and my other options are a bit cumbersome. The NFL makes it extremely hard to view their own product.


I also feel like there is a bit of oversaturation going on with TNF every week of the season.

One of them is willing to pay $50 per month for Sunday Ticket, but doesn't because they also want the Thursday and Monday night games. The NFL needs a comprehensive online package to offer the ever increasing number of cord cutters.

  Though my preference is to watch NFL games on Direct TV because of the TIVO feature ( I like looking at the plays more than once during live games ), the trend clearly seems like more and more people want to watch NFL games on TV.   The same with TV viewing in general.   This is probably one reason why many of the Thursday Night games are on Twitter in the U.S.  and many other countries around the world.

  The 29 combined accepted penalties (  there were some that were declined as well ) in the Lions loss to Tennessee certainly isn't going to help increase viewership if this game is a remotely close to a reflection of the consensus NFL game played on Sunday.    If Brad Allen and his crew are the officials in any game you see in the future,  it's best to prepare for a penalty feast.

I used to watch any NFL game that was on, Now I just watch the Jaguars. As the season's progress and we're looking at the draft earlier and earlier towards the end I don't even find myself watching them anymore.

Agree. It is a pretty big time commitment to be a fan these days with TNF, Sunday, and MNF.

I was all ready to drop DTV until they basically cut my bill in half, gave me pay channels for 6 months, and free NFL Sunday Ticket this year. When you call to cancel, make sure you actually cancel. It took 24 hours for a manager to call me back and offer me all of this free stuff.

--Speaking of those penalties ... unpardonable is the only word I can think of. Detroit had 10 in the first half alone, totaling 80 yards, and 15 heading into the fourth quarter. They wiped out three touchdowns and five first downs. Darius Slay's holding call allowed Tennessee to score its only points of the first half (and Antwione Williams suffered a game-ending injury in the process). There were 29 flags between the teams. Just unwatchable football at times.

In my opinion, over-saturation, poor reffing, bad games, politics play a major role in the NFL losing viewership.

 

I also think that one-sided reffing is removing parity from the game and below average teams aren't getting fair shakes to succeed.

 

As much as I dislike that weaselly little prick Mark Cuban, he kind of predicted this a couple years ago.
