I agree.  The education system (K-12) should be a private entity completely detached from government at all levels (federal, state, county or local).  Hire teachers and pay them according to how well they teach and what they teach.  Go back to teaching children how to think rather than teaching them what to think.

One of my personal heroes, Steve Wozniak pointed it out a long time ago.  For those that don't know, Steve Wozniak is the one that came up with the model that founded Apple computers (eventually became iphones).
