The Democrats’ Hispanic Voter Problem

#1

The Democrats are steadily losing ground with Hispanic voters. The seriousness of this problem tends to be underestimated in Democratic circles for a couple of reasons: (1) they don’t realize how big the shift is; and (2) they don’t realize how thoroughly it undermines the most influential Democratic theory of the case for building their coalition.

LOL, maybe Republicans should be for more Hispanic illegal immigration LOL. J/K...

Good article.
Cliffs notes version:
Hispanic voters shifted from the Democratic party to the Republican party by 10 to 20 points in just four years. This is in spite of Trump's tough guy tactics at the border and reductions in the rate of legal immigration. Nobody is sure why this happened, but the two most likely explanations are that Hispanics were turned off by the racial protests of 2020, because most of them identify as white racially, or that the Republican party overall is becoming the party of the working class, because 80% of Hispanic people identify as working class.

Yes, but those same Hispanics are typically for increased legal immigration.  They came legally, and usually had to wait a long time, so I can't see why they would ever be in favor of slowing things down further.  I can't see why they'd be in favor of reducing their own ability to bring over their family members legally.

What does tougher border control have to do with legal immigration?

Nothing, except Trump decided to reduce both legal immigration (less visas) and illegal immigration (remain in Mexico, zero tolerance, etc.)

Many Hispanics who live near the border have been American citizens for generations. They have no ties to the people illegally crossing the border. They are just as concerned about being flooded with undocumented immigrants as non Hispanics.

Right, the Hispanics living next to the southern border, they are Mexican by ancestry.  But the people crossing our Southern border today are not Mexicans. They illegally crossed into Mexico first, and now they hope to illegally cross into our country. The remain in Mexico policy is exactly what the doctor ordered.

Seriously, though, I'm all about bringing in motivated immigrants. I think they are some of our most patriotic citizens. However, welfare changes things. When you have people yearning to be free and rolling the dice on freedom to succeed or fail, you will get the most motivated people. When you get people who are looking for a free ride, it's going to change that. Even still, there have been caps on immigration at various times throughout our history. No one wants everyone out, but you can't absorb the poor of the entire world at one time.

Illegal immigration shouldn't have anything to do with legal immigration. All you do by keeping the Southern border open is to make people upset about immigration in general.

A door…a proper entryway. Imagine that.

It was so much easier to keep track of when they just came by ship.

Those words were not written by our government. The statue was given by the French, as a thank you for us taking in so many of the political exiles from the various revolutions not only in France but all over europe, especially in 1848.
The French government paid for the statue, and private donors in the US paid for the pedestal, including the poem, which was written by a private citizen.
Our government did not take the sentiment very seriously, because 30 years later they introduced our first restrictions on immigration.

When that was written this country wasn't in the welfare business. I don't have a problem with social services on the face of it as they have helped me when I had tough times. What I have a problem with is politicians using it to gain favor. The progressives are most definitely using it for this purpose.

Nothing is ever free but they sure don't act like it. Someone pays for it and it's not the upper echelon, it's the middle class.

Average Hispanic households, particularly in the southwest and in Miami hold very conservative values.  They are also very anti-communist and anti-socialist.  The made-up term "latinx" is an insult to many of them.  Democrats and in particular the far left of their party don't get this.

Only because they actually saw how terrible it was.

Kids today think it's magic and rainbows without having to strive and work hard. Hey, enjoy standing in line for beets. I'll be part of the oligarchy if it comes to that.
