Here's a darkhorse combination. Which wouldn't surprise me at all.

JoJo Wooden and Joe Lombardi. Wooden has been with the Chargers since 2013 as the Director of Player Personnel. Spent sixteen years with the Jets prior to that in similar roles.

He's been around some high's and low's. Worked in three challenging markets in the NFL between New York, San Diego and Los Angeles. Been apart of some interesting and intriguing roster builds in general.

Lombardi has the name. However, he also has the NFL experience and he's done great with Herbert in year one already as the play caller over there. He's showcased a relatively well balanced offensive attack.

Prior to that he was with Payton in New Orleans as the QBs coach in two separate stints. He was in Detroit with Caldwell a few years ago as the offensive coordinator when they were 11 - 5 and 7 - 9 for a two year stint.

This is a very quiet, intriguing combination that could sneak up into the conversation in the weeks to come. It's not overly flashy. However, it has a McDermott / Stefanski kind of vibe to it. Meaning, it could be what this team needs in the long run.

Some consistency.
