Think Driving an Electric Car Is Cheaper Than Gas? Think Again

Think Driving an Electric Car Is Cheaper Than Gas? Think Again

Led by President Joe Biden, the left has launched an all-out effort to cajole Americans into buying electric vehicles under the claim that they offer a cost benefit for drivers.

But some EV drivers have discovered that governments have no intention of letting them enjoy their cost savings scot-free and massive new taxes await them after the switch.

Instead of a sign that says "Do Not Disturb" I need one that says "Already Disturbed Proceed With Caution."

The rabid leftists and activists will gladly pay the money. What they don't seem to realize, or prefer not to realize, are the fossil fuels required to make those things and run the power plants. We need nuclear power for any of this to work the way it should but no one wants it in their backyard.

Nuclear or fusion, if it ever becomes a reality.

To broaden the subject just a bit, and while I appreciate some of her passion for this subject, I would ask the Greta Thunburg's of the World to imagine a world with only renewable energy, and then spend a summer of that World in Louisiana or Florida, or in any country on the Mediterranean, and then see if they don't go screaming to turn down the thermostat, only to find that renewable energy can't power the big machines needed. It's easy to yell and holler from Sweden which doesn't experience 90% humidity and 90plus F temps. Get the infrastructure in place that can run on low Amperage, then come back and we'll talk.

The problem is worse than you think.
Say humans want the temperature to be between 70 and 75 F.  In Florida we have seven or eight months of 90 to 95 F temperatures, so that's 20 degrees of error.  We use air conditioners to correct that error, which move 4 or 5 units of heat energy for every unit they consume.
Meanwhile in Sweden, they spend almost the entire year below this range.  Their annual average temperature is 45 F.  As an annual average, they are using machines to correct 25-30 F of temperature error.  And the machine they use is typically a boiler, which can only move the heat it consumes.
All told, roughly speaking, they use HVAC for 60% more time, against a 40% larger temperature difference, using machines that are 500% less energy efficient.
Their climate is much less suitable to low carbon living than ours.

She can't (or won't) and that's the problem with most activists, they can't see beyond their little corner of the world.  The population of North Carolina is as large as her entire country.
