What do you want to see from the starters this week?

I really don't understand this way of thinking.

What's wrong with someone creating a thread with a dedicated topic?

A thread about this match-up was started 5 days prior to this redundant thread.

In the post that initiated that thread the author asked "What do you want to see?"  And that was being discussed IN THAT THREAD for 5 days prior to this one.

If the board were busier with more fresh threads like it sometimes is during the reg. season - I'd absolutely merge this with the thread that's had already addressed the question at hand.

Lol. Well since we have a fresh thread I'll give a fresh take....consistency is what I want to see. We have been inconsistent for too long now so outside of that nothing else matters to me. 99 yard td, wow but can we score again or is that going to be it? Along those lines

I'm mostly interested in the starters.  I would love to see the starting offense move down the field with ease and score while the defense gives 3 and outs, but that's just stating the obvious.  If I had to be specific about something on offense, I would like to see some big plays.  A long pass from Trevor Lawrence to Zay Jones would be nice.  A long ETN run would also be good to see.  For defense, the one thing would be for Travon Walker to continue to look good.  He looked good last week, but one game can be a fluke or the result of poor competition.  If he goes out and dominates again today, I will feel confident that he's the real deal.  Most of our defensive players have a track record so I feel like I largely know what to expect.  Walker is one of my few question marks on defense.  If he can live up to his first overall pick selection (or something close to it), we'll have a good defense.

I don't expect fireworks, I don't expect flashy, I just want to see them look like they are on pace to be competitive on September 11th vs the Commanders.

It would be nice to see what Shatley and Fortner look like vs the browns starters if they play.  That's the "concern" area of the line IMO.

A bonus would be to see a flash or two from guys like Engram, Arnold, Etienne, and Zay.

Defensively - I'd just like to see them play well against the run. They still won't have both starting LBs on the field yet, but they need to start getting that run D ready for regular season. It's not there yet.

mmm-hmmmm

So the 3rd round rookie and and the guy that's been our back up center for the last 7 or 8 years that moved to guard is the weakness on our oline? I'd hope so.

Really? He looked quick. Has been the star of camp. Having someone with that kind of speed in the backfield keeps the whole defense honest.

Don’t get me wrong, I didn’t hate his performance.  I like his speed. He had that easy pass dropped and a few runs he had I couldn’t help but think JRob could’ve gotten more out of.  He’s essentially a rookie. Definitely rooting for him.  But I’m not wow’d yet.

What?  Are you ray charles?   The guy was explosive tonight and ran with power.   He is going to be a stud.

I am calling it now:

If ETN stays healthy the entire season I can see 1,500 combined yards a real possibility.

Douggie P basically said it all during his interview going into the half. "I don't know why he's (ETN) cutting back so much". Something I'm sure they'll make a point to school him up on this week.

It was his first game back in a year and really his first game since he left college. He got hurt really early last year and only got a few snaps of live game (only 1 touch iirc). He'll learn that everybody is fast in the NFL and he simply isn't going to run around people like he did in College. He has to experience that first though and I think he did a little bit tonight.

Etienne a welcomed sight. The 2021 campaign was a forgettable one for the Jaguars, but first-round pick running back Travis Etienne didn't even get to the regular season, as a Lisfranc injury ended his rookie year before it began. He was back on the field Friday and his quickness, speed and agility looked to be in prime form. He finished the game with nine carries for 23 yards and one catch for 10, but stat line, schmat line. This was a positive showing for Etienne, who's no doubt looking to make up for lost time. Etienne's fellow first-rounder, quarterback Trevor Lawrence, also looked solid after a slow start with his accuracy and clearly still has a great chemistry with his former Clemson teammate, who he targeted three times. If James Robinson returns healthy and Etienne continues to look like he did Friday, fortunes bode well for the Duval backfield.

I'd hope we didn't have to see a plan that involved making a backup center our starting LG

But here we are

I'd hope we didn't have to see a plan that involved making a backup center our starting LG

But here we are

I suspect they are trying to balance a few challenges.  A rookie center will be stretched, particularly early in the season, and having a guy on either side of him who are grisly veterans may be a safe bet for on-field coaching, etc.  But perhaps Bartch is a better guard than Shatley, but playing Bartch means you lose that on field coaching (if that’s what they are working at, which I think they are.  The veterans on either side idea came from the Pederson pre-game interview).

So the question is: what makes the line stronger?  Shatley next to Fortner with the on-the-spot mentorship or a slightly better Bartch but Fortner with less experience next to him?

My guess is we see Bartch getting practice time with the 1’s this week.  I think the decision on Shately or Bartch is less on the merits of them as individuals but how well Fortner plays lined up next to each of them.

EDIT: As I think about this some more, perhaps the reason Bartch has had some unexpected time running C drills is to give them the option of a less experienced LG. Maybe if Bartch understands the C responsibilities better then he’ll be less dependent on an experienced player in that position. Dunno. Shatley didn’t play well so they have to consider options to try next week. Or maybe take a punt on Shatley for the first three weeks of the season and then make a switch if they must.

EDIT II: Fortner may have something to do with Little getting a first team go as well. Scherff can only spread himself so thin. Fortner’s development may have a say as to how much inexperience they can accept on both sides of Scherff. How many times has Press Taylor said they need to figure the best combination of men in the OLine, or words to that effect? Sure, in one-on-one comparisons you may select different guys, but if you decide to put Fortner in at center then the question mark positions, LG and RT, become a choice of the best person/experience combination on the line. Could be. Only the coaches know for sure, guess.

So, it begs the question- what if our swing tackle is actually our best LG?  I wonder if they've thought of making a decision at RT and moving Jawaan Taylor to LG.
