NZ Outlaws Tobacco For Some People Forever

#1

New Zealand introduces lifetime ban on tobacco purchases:

https://abcnews.go.com/Health/wireStory/...s-95133504

WELLINGTON, New Zealand -- New Zealand on Tuesday passed into law a unique plan to phase out tobacco smoking by imposing a lifetime ban on young people buying cigarettes.

The law states that tobacco can't ever be sold to anybody born on or after Jan. 1, 2009.

It means the minimum age for buying cigarettes will keep going up and up. In theory, somebody trying to buy a pack of cigarettes 50 years from now would need ID to show they were at least 63 years old.

I actually have family in NZ. This is absolutely ridiculous. There is no way this will have the intended outcome. Policing something in this manner may be outside the box but that is because it is absurd. So will it be legal to consume tobacco products just not purchase. Phase it out by make the minimum age incredibly high but not a moving age.

Saying you can’t do something because you need to develop mentally or physically or because it harms other people justifies banning something or putting an age cap on it. But saying one generation is ok to do something and another is not is bordering on discrimination.

As a former smoker I think tobacco should be banned period. It's expensive as hell, even here in NC, and it causes all sorts of health issues that everyone across the board ends up paying for in insurance premiums.

On the other hand I believe folks should be free to toast their lungs if they want as long as they don't do it around me and I don't have to pay for it in my insurance premium. The former is much easier than the latter.

In the case of NZ banning someone from buying it doesn't ban someone from consuming it but it can create a black market of sorts.

Here are the current federal cigarette and tobacco tax rates:

Cigarettes: $1.01 / 20-pack

Tax by State

As you can see, it's the Feds and the States raking in the $$$$$. SO, if both the feds and the States are making the most off this commodity, and they know it causes cancer among other things, shouldn't the tax dollars go towards taking care of the people that PAID the tax in the first place?????

Just my 2 cents worth........
Instead of a sign that says "Do Not Disturb" I need one that says "Already Disturbed Proceed With Caution."

What, you don't like footing the bill for all the ills of society? You might need some re-education...I know a couple of socialist websites that will convince you to be willing and happy to pay.
Sarcasm aside, I don't understand the need to invite lung damaging smoke into a body, but as long as smokers aren't harming me with their secondhand smoke and aren't driving up my insurance premiums, then they can have at it. Of course, we both know it doesn't work that way.

Smart Country. Should help reduce healthcare costs in the long term. They also recently tightened their gun laws banning semiautomatic weapons in response to a mass shooting that left 51 Muslims dead while they were worshiping in a mosque. Amazing the great things a country can do when they don't let politics and campaign contributions get in the way. In the US, the NRA and Big Tobacco pretty much control the decision making of one side of our government simply by their donations.

Red Man has the Kale flavored chew and Skoal is coming out with the relaxing Chamomile flavor.   I think the Tequila flavored chew would be perfect since everyone loves the taste of tequila swirling around in their mouths.

Speak for yourself.  Last time I had tequila was about 20 some odd years ago.  I was probably not even 20.Drank so much at my own party, I called INT to work (a retail job) the next day still [BLEEP] up.  My boss asks “is this xxxx?” Yeah, I said.  Sorry, but I ain’t making it in today.  He politely informed me that I wasn’t even scheduled to work. Ever since then, the smell of it makes me want to Ralph.

You remember those balls on a string you could clack together up and down, and then they were outlawed because kids could lose an eye? That was the same time they stopped me from doing jumping jacks at summer camp. Eleven kids went home with eye patches, but at least they could get a 32 oz speedy freeze.

Face it, if we cancel everything that is bad for people, what am I going to say when someone cuts me off in traffic?  "You go straight to space mountain, and enjoy the ride"

Clackers! Man, I loved those as a grade school kid. That, and spinning tops. We used to have top wars, where each kid would try to spear the top of the other kids top with the point it spun on. Come to think of it, we had a few top-related injuries playing that. No one lost an eye, tho.

Speaking of unsafe toys....
