In One Sentence

Quote:I'll take the 1999 Roster any day !!

Offensive Starters

QB Mark Brunell*

RB Fred Taylor

FB Daimon Shelton

WR Keenan McCardell

WR Jimmy Smith*

TE Kyle Brady

LT Tony Boselli*+

LG Ben Coleman

C John Wade

RG Zach Wiegert

RT Leon Searcy*

Defensive Starters

DE Tony Brackens*

DE Renaldo Wynn

LDT Gary Walker

RDT Seth Payne

MLB Lonnie Marts

LB Kevin Hardy*+

LB Bryce Paup

LCB Fernando Bryant

RCB Aaron Beasley

SS Donovin Darius

FS Carnell Lake*
Granted, it is close and based more on the potential of this team.

Superiority of 1999 team:

Boselli and Searcy by huge margin over current tackles.

Fred Taylor by very big margin, but Ivory/Yeldon are still solid.

Brackens has edge over Fowler, but not so sure we'll say that in a few years.

Hollis (you forgot him) by ENORMOUS margin over Myers

Toss-ups:

Wide receiving unit. Smith was greatest Jaguar ever in his prime, but Robinson/Hurns/Lee will be equal of 99 unit.

Brunell and Bortles. I expect Bortles to keep improving.

Strong safety- Darius was biggest hitter ever, but couldn't cover me. Cyprien must prove himself this year.

Guards- Wiegert and Coleman were average.

Advantages of current team:

Myles Jack will be better than any backer on that team, including Hardy.

Poz over Marts, but not by alot at the end of his career.

Ramsay by big margin over Bryant.

Gipson over Lake, who made the pro-bowl that year because of his reputation.

Linder over Wade by alot.

Thomas slightly over Brady.

Telvin Smith over Paup by alot.

Jackson/healthy Miller over Walker and Payne

My math has this team with an 8-4 edge with the rest toss-ups. Again, this team must come together so performance equals potential.

The Jaguars are a team with major upside potential collectively but substantial growing pains on Defense are likely.

You pretty much nailed it and yes, the current defensive "Potential" has a lot more upside than the 1999 Roster.

Hey wait --- we forgot to compare Coaches and Kickers.

Coughlin by a nod over Bradley

Hollis by a nod over Myers

I did add kicker comparision, but neglected to compare coaches. Let me think about that.

Tom Coughlin- Future hall of fame coach who took 2 year franchise to the AFC championship and later won 2 Super Bowls against Belichek vs.

Gus Bradley- Won 12 games in 3 years as NFL head coach.

That's like comparing Marlon Brando as an actor to Adam Sandler or Mother Teresa as a person to Adolph Hitler.

Too bad because Gus is a great guy!

Great point.

2017 we will have a quality Head Coach, that's for sure.

If the Jags are going to come anywhere close to reaching their potential on the field this upcoming 2016 season (whatever that might be), Gus is going to have to have a breakout season and probably have to find himself, at least in the conversation for COTY.

I survived the Gus Bradley Error.

I see a team who, on paper, looks good; but, only the regular season will tell the tale.

Many thanks to all who contributed to this thread; much appreciated.  It was purposefully set to hear what our steadfast fans feel about the 2016 team in succinct terms.

Some risible takes, some telling, some gripes, but all practical.  As we tinker with the roster between now and Sunday/in-season, opinions may be affected, but no turning back.  We Are One Jaguars.

Success is a journey, not a destination.  Go all out Mighty Jaguars.

The Jaguars, while talented and ascending among the starting group, lacks depth and experience and will need to catch a break or two to make the playoffs.
