***Jaguars @ Colts Gameday***

It's interesting that the Jaguars win by 10, but most came away from the game not feeling overly positive about the Jaguars' performance.  Looking at, I think there were four main reasons:

  1. The opponent.  This was a 4-12 team from last year.  They were without Jonathan Taylor.  They were starting a rookie quarterback in week 1.  While some rookies may be considered "pro ready", this rookie was seen as a project so the expectations for his performance were even lower.  Jaguars fans were anticipating a big comfortable win.
  2. How the game played out.  If the Jaguars had taken a big early lead and then sat on it, the feel would have been completely different different.  That's not what happened here.  The Jaguars were losing going into the 4th quarter.  We were still losing with less than 6 minutes left in the game.  Again, this team was losing during the majority of the 4th quarter.
  3. Colts opportunity to score at the end.  The Colts had a 1st and goal from the 3 yard line and then a 2nd, 3rd and 4th and goal from the 1 yard line.  Calling it a "two score game" sounds nice, but they could have easily kicked a field goal and it would have been a 1 score game.  If they could have made a single yard at the end, this would have been a 3 point game.  The game all of a sudden seems much closer.
  4. Lack of big drives on offense.  We had 4 TD's, but they were assisted by excellent field position.  Two of those touchdowns came when the drive started in Colts territory.  The other two had the Jaguars starting at the 39 and 43 yard line which is also nice field position.  Excluding the kneel down, the Jaguars had 9 non-scoring possessions.  They moved the ball very poorly in these possessions.  None of the 9 drives was longer than 33 yards.  7 out of the 9 possessions were for less than 10 yards.  Fans were seeing a team that had trouble moving the ball against a 4-12 team.

A win is a win.  It was week 1.  I hope it was just week 1 rust.  However, this team will need to play better in week 2 if they want to beat the Chiefs.
