Duds/Studs of the Game Against KC

#1
(This post was last modified: 09-17-2023, 04:34 PM by OG-JAGFAN. Edited 1 time in total.)

DUDS

Press Taylor: That play calling was absolutely atrocious.  From not punching it in from first and goal to the one yard line to just flat out having an ineffective game plan.  We were touted as having an elite offense.  We just put up 9 points and 0 touchdowns against a good but not elite KC defense. The run game vanished

Trevor Lawrence: It was not all on him but he also played poorly today. From the numerous near misses early in the game to the numerous near misses in the back of the end zone. That last drive he could of run to easy pick up the first but he chose to try a high risk pass rolling to his left to Ingram on the sideline.  He did not play terrible but a far cry from Pat Mahomes.

Receivers: Numerous drops contributed to Lawrence poor performance.  Kirk dropped several key catches I noted.  Ridley was a ghost most of the game.

Offensive line: It is a problem.  This was another factor on Lawrence performance. Too many times Lawrence had less than 3 seconds in the pocket. Jones was just wrecking havoc to the offensive line.  I am an old school believer that it  starts up front

The offense: The numbers will show how bad it was. Nothing really was in sync today. 9 points is the story!

STUDS

Walker: He was a force today. He was in the backfield consistently while drawing several holdng penalties. His play at one point, forced Taylor to the bench.

Caldwell: He had a great game plan against the Chiefs. When Josh Allen went out lat in the game it nulified it but for most of the game it was a good game plan. Cisco nearly had 2 ints today.

Defense: This defense played a great game today. They forced 3 turnovers on top of that. They were the only reason this was not an [BLEEP] kickin'!

This one is easy.

Duds: Coaching and offense.

Studs: Defense and Logan Cooke.

Kirk had one drop that I noticed that was egregious but beyond that was solid. Walker did look like he was having an impact and I thought the defense overall had a nice game especially the secondary.
I'm condescending. That means I talk down to you.

Kirk was a stud. He went for a buck

Trever seems to throw so high that the receivers have to jump or stretch to catch the ball most of the time

Stud: Jawaan Taylor for all of his penalties. He was looking out for us. LOL Not that we capitalized on any of it.

Which makes the offense/coaching the Duds.

Cisco was awesome with that interception. Jenkins was disruptive. ETN was good when he was allowed to be. Gotsis made a couple of plays. Logan Cooke and McManus were on point. Herndon made a couple of plays.

I hope Josh Allen is good to go.

We just need to draft taller receivers.  Perhaps think out of the box and and venture over to the NBA Mock Draft site to see what 7 feet tall players may be available.

Listening to Doug after the game, this is the first time he’s seemed at a little bit of a loss to me. Not majorly but I got the feeling he really thought the offense would play well. If the team had gone down swinging and just lost to a better team, that’s one thing but looking as sloppy and basically giving the game away was pretty disheartening.

Doug was praising Press’s play calling.

Dud Anton Harrison, and the rest of the oline not far behind. Hopefully Harrison is going to improve as he learns. Will be interesting to see what happens when Cam returns.

Stud The defense.

I actually suggested that when I wrote in to the OZONE. I  Said we needed 7 foot tall or taller receivers maybe they could poach some from the NBA

He seemed pretty upset postgame.  It's gotta be frustrating to lose to your mentor every time.

I don’t think he anticipated how badly our O line would be manhandled, the effect it had on Trevor and the resulting offensive paralysis. That game was handed to us several times and we didn’t capitalize - one of the cardinal sins of football, or any sport.

Yes, yes, we lost to the defending champions and one of the most dynamic QBs to play the game, but we didn’t have to. Quite honestly, I believe Doug got caught flat footed.

Sad  (This post was last modified: 09-19-2023, 10:24 AM by cat bells. Edited 1 time in total.)

Said before the game i felt it was more important 'how we played' than the ultimate result and after a day or so with hindsight having caught up as best I can I haven't really altered my view.

Felt it was a good opportunity for us to put ourselves towards that tier of feared teams and earn that respect. Can't honestly say I think we achieved that offensively at least.

I always defer to those in attendance who get a better feel for the game, I stand ready to admit any error but I felt defence and special teams stood up, took their shots and went toe to toe. There will be people around the league taking notice of some of those performances. Start stringing three or four performances like that together especially against contenders and suddenly your opponent is on the backfoot before they start. They know they can't afford mistakes, know they have to be closer to 100%, know they're going to be punished for missteps and start feeling that element of pressure ...

Don't think anybody underestimates the mental side of pro-sports. Whether it's Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan, Brady or Mahomes, the ability the best have to put their opponents under the pressure to feel they have to elevate their own performance to perfection is an incalculable tool... Felt our offence fell into that trap slightly against the Chiefs. Mahomes wasn't having one of his better games i just felt that desire to raise yourself to a 'Mahomes' level knocked us out of our stride. Lost our poise slightly old boy!

I've generally no problem with the aggressive approach but you have to keep a clear head ... The 4th and 5 call was what it was, but it didn't reek , (even at the time) of thinking as calmly and clearly as they might have been in that situation. We were reaching! Every man loves his wife, but trying to get it on, in the overtaking lane of the motorway on Valentine's day... in the rain... in the dark, in a black seeping bag... Well ... Even if you're heart is in the right place, unless the wife's a raver it might cause you marital problems down the line when the HGV comes along! Sometimes the motel's a steady option!

Anyways, ... It's a shame, a missed opprtunity, and losing three against the Chiefs in relatively short order isn't ideal, something the coaches might have to address further down the line but it's no death knell on the season so park it and get on with the Texans.

If I had to pick one thing for the offense and especially Trevor to move up a level on its that ability to go into the big games against the best and stay calm, stay composed from the start and just play their own game and let their talent speak for itself rather than the mild (and occasionally not so mild) tendancy we have at the moment towards the harum-scarum. Do that and i fancy our performances will improve and we might start seeing the better teams feeling that pressure against us themselves.

How do you go into big games and stay calm and composed when the dline is in your grill all game?

I can accept a close/competitive loss.

The blowouts where we have no answer for what the other team brings are the ones that irk me something fierce.
