I saw Brad Nortman and Brandon Allen in uniform on the sideline. Neither of them played in the second half. This surprised me because Nortman is in a position battle and Allen is a rookie project QB. Also, I was wondering what happened to McCray. Was he at the stadium? He needed to play but I did not see him anywhere. Gus Bradley missed a few chances to answer questions about the depth chart.

Nortman isn't in any battle. The Jags let both Quigley and Ficken get work in tonight so they can get some decent game film for their next team. They'll both most likely be cut come Tuesday. McCray played and got burt. Allen most likely didn't play because he'll play a good portion of Thursday night's game.

Anytime a team has two punters in preseason, it is a position battle.

Is that typo for hurt or burnt?

Wrong again.

Every team carries an extra punter and a kicker for training camp/preseason. You don't sign a punter to a 16 million dollar contract and put him in a position battle a month later.

Burnt. Like toast.

Nortman was signed in FA, and given a nice lengthy deal. I don't think some camp body is about to take his spot, so no, there is no battle if he has won the job from the start.

They all looked pretty inactive tonight.

Not every team does. What is the purpose of bringing in another punter when you already paid one $16 million?

So your 16 million dollar punter doesn't get hurt in a meaningless preseason game.

So basically Ryan Quigley is just a training camp leg. Punters are among the least likely players to get hurt, so I don't think it would have been a big risk to have them split kicks.

There's already been 2 punters hurt this preseason.

Keeping the $ 16 million Punter fresh for the long regular season and possible post-season ahead.    This is even more pronounced in situations when the Punter is expected to be the primary Kickoff person.

Very few punters also handle kickoffs. Some teams sign a kickoff specialist. I expect the Jaguars to continue using one punter and one kicker on September 11.

At the very least, Sam Martin,  Pat McAfee,  and Thomas Morstead handle both Punts and Kickoffs.

Having a Kicker exclusively for Kickoffs and possibly Holds takes up a valuable Game Day and Overall Roster spot.

It's preseason, they let the camp legs have the third game quite often so they can show other teams what they've got. The first 2 games for Ficken he barely had anything to do so if/when he gets cut he'll be able to show off his game tape now.

They did it with Myers last year but he actually looked good and they ended up trading Scobee away.
